Default Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin official for UFC 90

Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin official for UFC 90 | MMAjunkie.com
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Aug 20, 2008 at 9:54 am ET

The UFC today officially announced a lightweight bout between former UFC title-holder Sean Sherk (32-3-1 MMA, 6-3 UFC) and contender Tyson Griffin (12-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) for its UFC 90 card on Oct. 25.

The fight is slated for the pay-per-view event's televised main card, which features a main event of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote.

The UFC also confirmed bouts previously reported by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com): Hermes Franca (18-7 MMA, 5-4 UFC) vs. Gleison Tibau (15-6 MMA, 3-3 UFC), and Pete Sell (7-4 MMA, 1-4 UFC) vs. Josh Burkman (9-6 MMA, 5-4 UFC).

UFC 90 takes place at Allstate Arena just outside of Chicago.

Griffin will go for his fifth straight win in the UFC with hopes of inching closer to a potential title shot. The Gladiators Challenge and Strikeforce veteran (and the only fighter ever to defeat WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber) has defeated notables Clay Guida, Thiago Tavares, Tibau and Marcus Aurelio during the streak.

Sherk, meanwhile, will return to the cage for the first time since his loss to UFC lightweight champ B.J. Penn in May. The title previously belonged to Sherk, but after failing a drug test after a successful title defense over Hermes Franca, he was suspended six months and stripped of the belt. He's maintained his innoncence (for alleged steroid use) throughout the now year-long ordeal.
