Default Lawler vs. Smith II could headline next CBS event

Lawler vs. Smith II could headline next CBS event | MMAjunkie.com
by John Morgan on Jun 01, 2008 at 7:30 am ET

NEWARK, N.J. – After a less-than-suitable ending to an exciting, back-and-forth match-up between EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith left many searching for a definitive conclusion, EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw said the company hopes to host the rematch as a main event on their next CBS broadcast.

Shaw even went so far as to ponder aloud a possible title for the show: "Unfinished Business."

"We've got to check Robbie, how he is physically, and how Scott (who suffered a broken right foot during the bout) is physically," Shaw said. "If they're both ready to do it again, I would assume they would fight on our next CBS show."

Saturday's title fight, which served as a co-main event to Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson's third-round TKO of James Thompson, ended in anticlimactic no-contest after Lawler (15-4) caught Smith (13-4) with an inadvertent eye poke in the third round. Smith maintained he was OK to continue, but officials refused to let the bout continue.

Championship bouts that are stopped early due to injury require the completion of at least three rounds. Because the stoppage came halfway through the second, no victor was declared, and Lawler got to keep his belt.

The reigning champion seemed open to the idea of a rematch.

"I was going for the kill and so was [Smith]," Lawler said. "We didn't get to finish the fight. ... I felt good out there, and I look forward to doing it again."

The challenger seconded the motion.

"I hate fights ending that way," Smith said. "I did not want to stop that fight. I wanted to go back out there. ... I'm glad EliteXC is going to give me another chance. That is a fun fight."

As for when and where that bout may take place, Shaw seemed unsure, but he offered some possibilities.

"It's probably going to be early fall," Shaw said when asked by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "Could be as early as August -- or September, October roughly. ... I'd like to bring these guys back. They've got unfinished business. That could be the name of the show, ‘Unfinished Business,' because that's what it is."

Shaw explained that EliteXC and CBS want the shows to remain within the top 10-12 television markets in the U.S. And while Shaw did not rule out a return trip to Newark, he also mentioned Miami or Los Angeles as other venues that could host the event.
