Default Emelianenko and Sylvia to fight in July

Emelianenko and Sylvia to fight in July - MMAjunkie.com

by MMAjunkie.com Staff [mmajunkie-staff] on Apr 08, 2008 at 3:24 pm in - News -

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia (24-4) and longtime PRIDE title-holder Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) have agreed to fight on July 19, most likely at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

The news was first reported by Sherdog.com, which learned of the fight from Emelianenko. According to the report, the event will likely be promoted by Affliction in partnership with HDNet Fights.

Affliction is a popular MMA clothing brand that recently made known its intentions of entering the fight-promotion business.

Sylvia, a longtime UFC fighter who only recently split from the organization, signed a non-exclusive deal with Adrenaline MMA, an organization (formerly known as M-1 Global) that is run bu his agent, Monte Cox. Sylvia had one fight remaining on his UFC contract, but the organization opted to let him out of the deal.

Upon his split from the UFC, the 32-year-old Miletich fighter issued a warning and told Emelianenko he wanted to fight him.

Emelianenko, who recently severed all ties with M-1 Global (after it was learned he never actually signed with the organization in the first place), remains one of the sport's most accomplished fighters.

The 32-year-old held the PRIDE Fighting Championships' heavyweight belt for more than four years before the organization's eventual demise this past summer. Although he's defeated some of the most notable fighters in the sport, he's fought few (if any) top-tier guys in recent years. He last fought in December at the Yarennoka! New Year's Eve 2007 show, where he defeated 7-foot-2 Hong Man Choi with a first-round armbar.

Emelianenko's manager: Sylvia fight not signed - MMAjunkie.com

by Dann Stupp [mmajunkie] on Apr 09, 2008 at 10:03 am in - News -

Although the two fighters appear close to an agreement, heavyweights Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) and Tim Sylvia (24-4) have not signed bout agreements for their reported July fight.

Sherdog.com first reported the bout, learning of the fight directly from Emelianenko. The fight is expected to be held under the Affliction banner and will likely air on Mark Cuban's HDNet high-definition station.

However, Vadim Finkelstein, Emelianenko's manager, threw up a caution flag and said the details are still being worked out. Additionally, a representative for Sylvia confirmed the pending status with MMAjunkie.com (MMA blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps - MMAjunkie.com) overnight.

As Finkelstein told m1mixfight.com: "At the moment we can't certainly say the bout will take place come July because the contract is not signed. However, the both parties are involved in the negotiation process and we are about to break the finishing tape although we haven't come to an agreement concerning every detail as of yet."

While Finkelstein makes the bout sound promising, it's worth noting that the Russian can be a shrewd negotiator. As MMAjunkie.com previously reported, EliteXC offered Emelianenko a four-fight deal that would have paid a minimum of $300,000 to $500,000 per fight. However, EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw later confirmed that Emelianenko and his camp wanted $2 million per fight.

Those tough practices have also apparently slowed a potential deal with the UFC, with whom Finkelstein and Emelianenko have on-again, off-again negotiations.

Emelianenko, 32, held the PRIDE Fighting Championships' heavyweight belt for more than four years before the organization's eventual demise this past summer.

Although he's defeated some of the most notable fighters in the sport, he's fought few (if any) top-tier guys in recent years. He last fought in December at the Yarennoka! New Year's Eve 2007 show, where he defeated 7-foot-2 Hong Man Choi with a first-round armbar.

Sylvia would arguably be his toughest test since an August 2005 fight with Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic

Fedor: Fight with Sylvia now official - MMAjunkie.com

by MMAjunkie.com Staff [mmajunkie-staff] on Apr 18, 2008 at 11:43 pm in - News -

Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) says a rumored bout with former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia (24-4) -- a bout he first announced earlier this month -- is now official.

The former PRIDE title-holder confirmed the July 19 fight on his personal website.

Although Emelianenko mentioned neither a host nor a venue for the fight, recent reports suggest that it'll be part of Affliction's first-ever MMA show, and it's likely to take place at the American Airline Center in Dallas.

Back in October, Emelianenko and the restructured M-1 Global organization announced a multi-fight, multi-million-dollar deal. However, CEO Monte Cox later confirmed that Emelianenko simply signed a letter of intent, and the fighter became a free agent after returning a $1.5 million signing bonus.

Earlier this month, Sylvia announced that he had parted ways with the UFC and had agreed to a non-exclusive deal with Adrenaline MMA, the new name for M-1 Global. Just minutes after the announcement, Sylvia said he wanted to fight Emelianenko.

Emelianenko, once considered the world's undisputed best fighter, has seen his legacy diminish due to a lack of top-tier opposition over the past couple years. In the past year, he's fought (and defeated) only Matt Lindland, a middleweight, and Hong Man Choi, who owns a mere 1-1 professional MMA record.
