Default Kampmann scratched from UFC 72????

In perhaps his biggest opportunity to date, Martin Kampmann (15-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) was slated to face former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin (21-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) in the main event of next month’s UFC 72 event. However, according to today’s Savage Dog Show on Sherdog.com, the Danish kickboxer may be pulled off the card because of an injury.

The type and the extent of Kampmann’s injury is not known.

If news of the injury is true, the UFC would still have nearly six weeks to find a replacement. However, this specific bout was one of the few marquee matches on a fairly lackluster UFC 72 card, and the UFC would need to find a legitimate contender with real starpower to fill the possible void.

At this point, a logical replacement would be Yushin Okami (20-3 MMA, 4-0 UFC). The Japanese fighter defeated Mike Swick at last month’s UFC 69 event and has previous UFC victories over Alan Belcher, Kalib Starnes and Rory Singer. Okami has been stopped just once in his career (with his other two losses coming via split and majority decisions). However, because he’s one of the UFC’s most underrated fighters, he’s may not be much of a draw. (Then again, the same could be said for Kampann.)

However, there’s no telling if Okami’s even physically prepared to fight just two months after his three-round unanimous-decision win over Swick.

Regardless, expect more news about this possibly injury to surface in the next 24 hours.

UFC 72 takes place in Belfast at the Odyssey Arena. The event, which airs on Spike TV, will be the first ever held in Ireland.
