Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell rumored to be playing the villains in "Iron Man 2"

Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are in talks to play the villains in "Iron Man 2," which is eyeing a spring start ahead of a May 2010 release.

A very tight lid is being kept on the script, but it is known that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils.

Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Anthony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, a role being reprised by Robert Downey Jr.

Gwyneth Paltrow is also returning as Tony Stark/Iron Man's executive assistant, while Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard as the hero's best buddy. Another part -- one for Stark's assistant Natasha -- is still open.

Jon Favreau is also back as director of the Marvel Studios/Paramount project, working from a script by Justin Theroux. The first film, released in April, grossed $582 million worldwide.

Rourke is making the best of the accolades he is receiving for his heart-wrenching turn in "The Wrestler." On top of this big-budget movie, the actor, who will next be seen in "The Informers," just joined the cast of "The Expendables," an action movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren.

Rockwell is best known for his indie dramas. He recently starred as a sex-addicted con man in "Choke" and as an estranged husband in "Snow Angels." He can currently be seen in the political drama "Frost/Nixon," playing David Frost's researcher, writer James Reston, Jr.

Mickey Rourke Officially in Iron Man 2

Well, it’s official. Mickey Rourke has signed on to play Whiplash, the Russian villain, in Iron Man 2. So the who’s who list of actors now reads: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson. What a cast!

There should be some really good face-offs between Rourke and Downey and I look forward to seeing how they come out.

There is also talk that Rourke is in negotiations to be a villain in Spiderman 4. What a comeback Mr. Rourke!

Release date for Iron Man 2 is set for May 7, 2010.

Whoopi Goldberg: '‘He doesn’t know when he’s going so he’s just going forward’'

Patrick Swayze is doing well according to his pal and former “Ghost” co-star, Whoopi Goldberg.

Goldberg, the moderator on ABC’s “The View,” said she spoke to Swayze, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer, on Monday night. He told her he is throwing his all into a host of projects.

“He’s actually quite good,” Goldberg told her fellow “View” ladies. “He’s got this show on, ‘The Beast,’ which is on A&E … and you know, he’s working his tail off.”

Goldberg said Swayze is very aware of his illness, but isn’t letting it stop him from living his life.

“He’s sick, there’s no getting around it, but like all of us, we all know at some point we’re gonna die, we don’t know when,” she said. “We’re not absolutely sure … But as it turns out, there’s no expiration date on his a--. He doesn’t know when he’s going so he’s just going forward. He’s gone back into training for ‘The Beast’ 'cause you know, this show he’s running and jumping and rolling and doing all kinds of… it’s crazy.”

Swayze is also busy on his manuscript and his ranch.

“He’s in very, very good spirits,” Goldberg added. “He’s in the middle of writing a book with (his wife) Lisa (Niemi), which is kind of great. He’s got all this land where he is right now and he’s been … making sure all the new growth that needs to happen on his property happens.”

Out of all of Swayze’s pursuits though, it’s the physical activity for “The Beast” that impressed Goldberg the most.

“The training is what got me,” she said.

But she wasn’t sure if she could believe one of the comments he made.

“I don’t know if he’s teasing, he said he’s shaved his head,” she laughed. “I was all, ‘You gotta send me a picture.’ He’s good. So whatever you’re reading, just know that he’s kicking butt… He’s living in the moment and… doing one day at a time.”

Yeah, i was shocked how much i liked Iron Man....Never read a single Iron Man comic, so, had no clue wtf to expect, but, i figured it had to be at least interesting with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead, and, the trailers were amazing, so, took a shot, and wound up loving the movie...

Casting Downing in it was brilliant, imo....And now, this 2nd one sounds even more promising....I mean, holy shit, what a cast..

Rourke impresses in Iron Man sequel

Mickey Rourke "does not disappoint" as the villain in the new Iron Man sequel, according to director Jon Favreau

"Mickey Rourke's (sic) first day. Rourke does not disappoint," he wrote on his Twitter page. "Stayed late to watch dailies. It's great to see these characters come to life."

Mickey joins Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Don Cheadle, who replaces Terrence Howard as the superhero's military ally in the movie, which began filming this week.

Jon has been regularly tweeting from the set of the film. Earlier this week he wrote "swarm of paparazzi on set" and 'First day went great. I've never worked on a sequel before. It's like we picked up where we left off."

Iron man 2 is set to hit cinemas next May.
