Troubled socialite NICOLE RICHIE has been sentenced to four days in jail after pleading guilty to driving under the influence.

The 25-year-old was sentenced on Friday morning (27Jul07) in Los Angeles Superior Court, where she was supported by her boyfriend, Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden.

Richie was arrested on 11 December (06) when she found driving her Mercedez Benz the wrong way down California State Route 134 highway in Burbank, California.

After failing an on-field sobriety test, Richie admitted to having smoked marijuana and taken a vicodin painkiller.

In court on Friday, Richie was fined $2,048 (£1,024) and ordered to complete a 21-day alcohol education course. She has also been placed on three years probation.

Richie must serve her time in either the City or County Jail before 28 September (07).

The Superior Court Commissioner warned Richie she had put lives at risk during the incident and if she drove under the influence again and killed someone, she could be charged with murder - not manslaughter.

Richie was previously convicted of driving under the influence in 2003.

In recent weeks, Richie has been rumoured to be pregnant with Madden's baby, although neither have confirmed or denied the report.

In an exclusive television interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer, Nicole Richie confirms for the first time she is pregnant with Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden's baby.

"Yes, I am. We are. I'm almost four months," Richie told Sawyer.

Richie, who is the adopted daughter of musician Lionel Richie, is a favorite paparazzi target and subject of gossip magazines, which have speculated endlessly about her pregnancy, her weight, her drug use and her relationships with other celebrities, most notably Paris Hilton.

In the interview, Richie speaks candidly about why this particular constellation of young female stars -- Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, among others -- have behaved badly so publicly.

Richie was arrested on Dec. 12 for driving under the influence, after she was spotted driving the wrong way down a highway in Burbank. She admitted to the police that she smoked marijuana and took the prescription painkiller Vicodin.

Richie pleaded guilty last Friday, and was sentenced to four days in jail, which she has until Sept. 28 to serve.

Richie also addresses her upcoming jail time, what happened the night she was arrested for driving the wrong direction on the interstate and more and how she thinks her actions have affected those girls who look up to her.

"I have a responsibility and it's something that I did wrong, and if I could personally apologize to every single person that has lost a loved one from drunk driving I would," Richie said about her recent guilty plea. "And unfortunately I can't, but this is my way of paying my dues and taking responsibility and being an adult."

According to the official website of the L.A. Sheriff's Dept., Richie checked in at 3:15 PM and was released at 4:37 PM. She was assigned to a cell for only 35 minutes! It takes longer to watch an episode of "The Simple Life" ... and it's more painful!

A Sheriff's source tells TMZ Nicole was routinely processed and released according to normal operating rules.

Socialite Nicole Richie and her rock-star boyfriend became the parents of a daughter in Los Angeles on Friday, People magazine reported.

Harlow Winter Kate Madden was born at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, People said, quoting a spokesman for Richie's manager. It is the first child for Richie, 26, and Joel Madden, 28, the lead singer of pop-punk band Good Charlotte.

Richie, the adopted daughter of singer Lionel Richie, has become a tabloid staple in recent years on account of her party-hopping lifestyle, stick-thin figure, and fractured friendship with Paris Hilton, her co-star in the reality TV series "The Simple Life."

A pregnant Richie spent an hour in a Los Angeles jail in August after being sentenced to four days for driving the wrong way on a Los Angeles freeway while under the influence of drugs. Prison overcrowding in Los Angeles County means nonviolent offenders often spend only a fraction of their sentences behind bars.
