1) The Pitcher

Not just who's pitching...but how he does VS that team, in that ballpark, etc.

2) The hitters

How the big sticks do against the pitchers... For example... Bonds really lights up certain guys.

3) Weather

You've touched on this already

4) The last few games.

Streaks are all around baseball... If New Yorks 3,4,5 hitters are currently 6-60 in the last 5 games... well you get the idea. But don't ride streaks too long...they always break.

One of the best stats for totals is WHIP. ERA is a bit misleading sometimes but WHIP lets you know how many runners get on base per inning!

It is an average of walks and hits per inning pitched. I think that covers.com has this stat, I am sure other places do as well. You can do it on your own by taking the number of innings a pitcher has pitched and dividing it by the number of hits + number of walks they have given up.

most sites like espn.com will list a pitcher's whip with all the other season stats (strikeouts, walks, etc.). WHIP stands for Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched. To calculate WHIP just add the number of walks and hits the pitcher has given up for the season and divide by the innings pitched.

For my totals making, I use a stat I made up years ago that is just being distributed by VegasInsider in a weekly email.

It's called EPAS. That's Era, Per Average Start.

I list every pitcher's average length of start, then list the Earned runs allowed per start beside it. It's far more accurate than the standard projected ERA stat that counts a number over the course of nine innings (which no one pitches).

I write two articles and include the EPAS stat for all starting pitchers. Go to www.vegasinsider.com, look on the right for "Free Newsletters" and sign up. I think it's distributed every Tuesday morning.

All of the above are solid tools and must be used. But one which was pointed out by The Actuary,
is the home plate umpire. There are some trends with umpires, which boggle the mind. Certain dudes
are huge over umpires, and certain dudes are under umpires. Never make a total play, without
checking these statistics out.
