Default McCain's March Madness

First it’s the NCAA’s meddling hands disrupting the very popular NCAA tournament bracket pools, now it’s the politician’s attacking the college men’s basketball’s golden egg, if they know it or not.

Expect a push to ban collegiate sports betting in Nevada to coincide with March Madness.

The bills main supporter, Senator John McCain R-AZ, hasn’t given up on getting college sports betting stopped. McCain has stated as recently as last week that he intends to “attach” the betting ban to another bill. This strategy has been used in the past to pass bills that wouldn’t pass on their own. McCain’s fellow Arizona Senator, Jon Kyl attached his previous proposal to ban internet gambling in a prior year, as an amendment to the Commerce, Justice, and State appropriation bill. An amendment that was going to pass, due to other content. That bill passed 90-10 and gave his bill legs before being shot down. The 90-10 vote had nothing to do with the Kyl Bill. However reference is still made to that Bill having support, when clearly that was not the case.

Now again, instead of attempting to pass a bill as a free-standing piece of legislation, the backdoor is sought. John Ryan, legislative director to Senate Majority Whip Harry Reid, who has been successful in keeping previous bills off the Senate floor stated that it will be much tougher to keep this bill off if it is attached to another.
McCain is expected to coordinate his efforts in time for the NCAA basketball championship tourney. The campaign is expected to bring out college players, coaches and university administrators to speak out and persuade Congress to enact the ban.
