Default The fallout continues at Mandalay Bay...

I don't know if this has been posted yet, so sorry if it has been!

ESPN.com news services

Former NBA star Charles Barkley made two large Super Bowl bets in Las Vegas that resulted in $750,000 in winnings and the resignation of the Race and Sports Book Director at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.

According to Theprescription.com, a Las Vegas Web site, Barkley made separate bets of $500,000 and $50,000 on the underdog New England Patriots. When the the Patriots pulled off the upset over the St. Louis Rams, Barkley was owed $750,000 in winnings -- but there is a catch.

According to the web site, Nick Bogdanovich, the director of the Race and Sports Book at Mandalay Bay, punched in Barkley's two bets without taking in any money or chips. Barkley's line of credit at Mandalay Bay was $500,000, and Barkley did not sign any markers for the two bets, which wouldn't have been completely covered by his credit. Also, Bogdanovich never called his bosses for permission to take Barkley's bets, a standard procedure when betting such a large amount.

As of Friday, the Mandalay Bay Hotel would not confirm whether Barkley's winnings will be paid. The hotel did confirm that Bogdanovich has resigned.

I AM NOT familiar with the operation of the Gaming Commission but I expect this one will go before them before Barclay is paid. Assuming he refused to Sign a marker or give the tickets back as has been reported.

Damn shame. The guy plays, WINS, and has to worry about being paid. Don't seem right?

Bayshore,

Would Barclay have paid IF he had lost --- when he refused to sign a marker or give the ticket back as has been reported, it seems to me he was comfortable with the FREE SHOT

I still think there's a law in Nevada that prohibits credit betting (markers) in the sportsbook.

I mentioned that in the Rx thread, and everybody laughed me off.

I booked in Vegas for 7 years, and never saw a marker. Granted, it was a smaller book with small limits. But the damn casino STILL used markers in the pit.

I phoned a friend who still works there. He is also under the impression that cash or chips or winning tickets MUST be present to accept a bet.

GCB would stop periodically (once or twice a year) to give us a pop quiz on the rules and regs. I never flunked one, so I think I have SOME idea of what I'm talking about.

Bobby

Devil, You book it you pay it is a wonderful way to do business --- but, there still must be "Consideration" for there to be a contract. What was Barclays consideration?

Right or wrong, I think when Barclay refused to sign a marker (assuming that is the case) even though it was after he received the ticket, I feel that there was not Consideration for the ticket which would void the contract in most jurisdictions

From my view, all tickets go as written does not preclude claims that there was no consideration for the ticket which would not be the case in other disputes involving mistakes

I use markers to bet at various vegas books. I get the marker at the cage and then walk to book and make the bet.

Just because you have a ticket doesn't mean it's good if there are "circumstances". We "red flagged" tickets that were gotten by error, and if the ticket ever won there would be hell to pay. When something is wrong, paper work has to be filled out, a lot of red tape. Maybe that's why he resigned, because all of this red tape was not religiously followed. I hope "Sir Charles" gets what he deserves....

Fish,

Are the casinos extending you credit? Or are you posting up money at the cage, and bringing documentation of that to the sportsbook?

If CB did make the bet and he refused to sign a marker and he was given the ticket not only does he deserve the money because he has the ticket, the person or people who gave him that ticket should be fired. CB could say that he paid the bet in chips and or cash and their is not a thing Mandalay Bay could do about it. Remember one very important thing, He has the ticket, case closed. This is assuming this story is true.

Teamowner,

Bagdonavich was fired reportedly but the circumstances are reported to be a little different than you understand ---- the bookie thought barclay had made arrangements in the pit for the play and had paid for it by signing a marker there and was sent over to just pick up the ticket ---- Barclay was found before the game and asked to either give the ticket back or sign a marker for the "purchase" price which would have exceeded his credit limit at the Mandalay Bay ---- I expect they wanted the ticket BACK first and as a after thought wanted the marker signed --- this is not clear cut, thus the reason I think it will go to the GCB

vegas books dont take markers on the norm, they can get a marker at the cage and bring chips down to bet with.

but at the book your either going to give them cash or chips.
