Default What's the difference between australian lobsters and maine lobsters??

I was eating lunch at a local chinese restaurant today and saw several variety of lobsters in their fish tanks...The australian lobsters look like they weigh more than 5 pounds and the maine lobsters look about 2 pounds....

Has anyone here tasted aussie lobsters?? Is the meat still juicy or hard like michelin tires???

The aussie lobster is a cold water lobster. The meat is suppose to be whiter and sweeter. It also doesn't brown like Maine Lobsters can. As to the better tasting .................personal preference.

Clevfan,

As for lobsters at the fine seafood restuarants, I've pretty much tried them all... I've just never seen a giagantic australian lobster before!!! These things look scary.... I was surprised to see fresh alaskan, australian, and pacific rock lobsters at the chinese restaurant...

Personally, I prefer alaskan king crab legs over lobsters!!!!

I went to a place in Ixtapa where a dude would dive off a cliff, grab a couple of lobsters, and then they would boil 'em up tableside. That is some sweet action.

Cold water shellfish is generally preferable to warm water, as are younger shellfish to older, and female prefered to male.

sure there are many who would debate this, but the further you dive into the subject the more you will agree I think.

When it comes to this its much like wine, the more you drink the pickier you get, many can spot the difference between a lobster cooked fresh off of cape cod vs. one cooked off of northern Maine, in a heart beat. Just as northern scallops are far prefered over warm water ones, fresh Maine shrimp are coveted, and those who've had fresh alskan king crab legs will never go back.

there's a reason the ice cold waters off the pacific northwest produce some of the best seafood in the world, particularly shellfish.

truthfully, I don't know about australian lobster. but would have to ask, does the water get so cold in the winter it supports ice?

As far as a huge lobster of any sort, strictly a tourist advertisement, a native will never be caught eating anything but the young sweet and tender.

Np whistler, that was a stetup, but don't know what texta is.

Making a prediction here, that's what we're her for, and that is the northeren atlantic young lobsters will be especially sweet and tasty this summer, even the ones as far south as cape cod. The waters were historically cold last summer, and than topped off by severe ice on the sea this winter, very rare.

Load up on lobster. If you can get north atlantic scallops, invest heavily.

I think the fact that the Gulf Stream runs up the east coast is the reason the seafood is so good there and also the fact that Maine Lobsters aren't considered Cold Water.

Sage you are correct, and had to do some research on this since its such an important topic.

Cold-water lobster tails come primarily from Australia, New Zealand and South America. Warm-water lobster tails are harvested near Central and South America.

Cold-water lobster tails are considered superior to warm-water lobster tails. They grow more slowly, and as a result the meat is whiter, tenderer, tastier and cleaner than warm-water lobster tails. As a result, cold-water lobster tails can be two to three times the cost of warm-water lobster tails.

Maine lobster tails and slipper lobster tails do not fall into these categories. These are considered to be "specialty" lobster tails. Neither enjoys the reputation of the cold-water rock lobster tails.

Also, the particular species of Atlantic lobster may add to its flavor.
