Default I KNOW I WILL PROBABLY GET RIPPED FOR THIS BUT,

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF SEEING RAY BORQUE'S FACE EVERYWHERE, AND I THINK IT WAS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING TO SEE HIM ACTUALY BRING THE STANLEY CUP TO BOSTON. TO THINK PEOPLE WERE CHEERING IS A JOKE. HE COULDNT WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THAT TEAM, HE LEFT AND WENT TO THE BEST TEAM IN HOCKEY(WHICH WOULD HAVE WON WITHOUT HIM) AND HE IS THE STORY OF THE YEAR. IT TEACHES PEOPLE NOT TO HAVE LOYALTY, THE PEOPLE OF BOSTON HAD ANOTHER MISERABLE YEAR AND THEY ARE CELEBRATING WITH THE STANLEY CUP. I COMPARE IT TO THIS: DO YOU THINK PATRICK EWING WOULD BRING THE TROPHY TO NEW YORK IF HE WINS A CHAMPIONSHIP IN ORLANDO, OR BETTER YET WOULD THE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK CHEER HIM. HELL NO!
HEY LETS HAVE DAN MARINO SIGN A CONTRACT FOR THE RAMS AND PLAY BACK-UP QB, AND WHEN THEY WIN HE WILL BE A SUPERBOWL CHAMP. HIS CAREER WILL BE FULLFILLED. OR HAVE STOCKTON AND MALONE SIGN FOR THE LEAGUE MINIMUM AND PLAY FOR THE LAKERS WHEN THEY WIN THE TITLE LETS HAVE THEM CELEBRATE IN UTAH. I THINK ITS AN ABSOLUTE JOKE AND BRINGING THE CUP TO BOSTON WAS ACTUALLY RUBBING IT IN THE PEOPLES FACE BY SAYING I COULDNT WIN WITH YOU SO I WENT TO THE BEST TEAM AND I GOT MY CHAMPIONSHIP.

I think there is alot of truth in what you say. I mean I can understand the average sports fan being happy for him that he won, and even the average Bruin fan. As I, a Knick fan, would be if Ewing won a title in Orlando. However thats about it. No need for celebrations in downtown NY!

I am a huge Bruins fan and Bourque fan. I totally disagree with you. Ray is true class and in the end that may make all the difference in the world.

Shoe

I totally agree with you. Or even better, if Bonds went to the Yankees.

Boston is a great sports town that has had precious little to celebrate (lately) when it comes to championships.
Bourque is one of ours. So what, he had to go outside of the sphere to bring Boston a tiny taste of glory?
He made people who adore him happy.

"IT TEACHES PEOPLE NOT TO HAVE LOYALTY.."

Boston stayed loyal to Ray. Bruins fans got to share in his victory.
I don't see anything "absolutely disgusting" about happy, loyal fans at all.

Maybe someday I'll get tired of the hoopla too. That's why my remote has all those little buttons.

Ray is a class act and has helped the Boston community in many ways. Ray has achieved a goal only a few can obtain. He will always be a Boston Bruin and Boston will always be in debt to him. Mark

Just to add, Bourque was not some third wheel in Colorado like your Marino example. He played MORE minutes than any other defenseman on the team. He was a finalist for the Norris trophy. I am not a Bruin fan by any means, but I personally feel that without him last year, they don't win the cup.

Shoebox,

I understand what you are saying, but you are misreading it... because you dont understand what that was about. Its a huge deal when players win the Stanley Cup. In no other sport is the chanpionship trophy revered as it is in hockey. Each player on the winning team is allotted a certain amount of time with the Cup. They get do whatever they want with it. I'm not sure if that was part of Ray's "allotted time" or not... but make no mistake, that most definitely meant alot to the Bruins fans.

Disclaimer: this post is being written by a man who tried convincing his wife to allow their son to be named "Raymond".

No athletes are as "loved" by their fans as hockey players.

Boston fans weren't rooting for Boggs or Clemens when they went title-hunting.

If you grew up near Boston, and watched number 77 give it his all for 20+ years, you'd understand the attachment we have to him.

And if you're old enough, you'd agree that if Bobby Orr announced his candidacy for Mayor of Boston, the other candidates would surely withdraw, seeing the futility of a campaign.

Bobby

SO I GUESS WADE BOGGS OR ROGER CLEMENS DIDNT GIVE IT THERE ALL WHILE PLAYING FOR THE RED SOX. THE REASON THEY WERE NOT ROOTING FOR BOGGS AND CLEMENS IS BECAUSE THEY BOTH WENT TO THE HATED YANKEES. ANYWAY I EXPECTED A LITTLE DIS AGREEMENT BUT THIS IS MY OPINION AND I HATE SEEING ANYTHING REGARDING THIS STORY EVERYTIME A HOCKEY GAME IS ON.

P.S. I WAS SICK TO MY STOMACH AND WANTED TO THROW UP WHEN I HEARD PEOPLE COMPARING BORQUE TO JORDAN AND ELWAY RETIRING AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME AND GOING OUT ON TOP WITH A CHAMPIONSHIP. GIVE ME A F**KING BREAK JORDAN AND ELWAY WENT OUT ON TOP RIGHT WHERE THEY STARTED THEIR CAREER'S. NOT LIKE THIS TITLE HUNTER AND OH BY THE WAY FOR THOSE WHO DIDNT KNOW BORQUE'S JERSEY IS BEING RETIRED BY THE AVALANCH WHERE HE PLAYED ALL OF 1 YEAR FOR THE TEAM. IF THAT ISNT A JOKE I DONT KNOW WHAT IS. THATS MY OPINION!!!!!!

Earth to shoebox. Jordan and Elway did not start their careers on top! What are you saying? It took Jordan almost 8 years to win a championship and Elway 14 years. Bourque has been a class act his entire career and to think that he was just tagging along for the ride is ignorant if not outright STUPID!

You must be a very bitter man to let something like this bother you so much. Could it be you had the Devils in the finals?

Ray came to Denver and did what he had to do to FINALLY get what he honestly deserved to have after what he had given to the game. He defines class act. I loved seeing the jerseys split down the middle-very cool.

Perfect ending to a career.

BAD EXAMPLE?????????????? PATRICK EWING IS ONE OF THE TOP 50 BASKETBALL PLAYERS ALL TIME AND HE NEVER WON A CHAMPIONSHIP, NOR WOULD HAVE BORQUE IF HE DIDNT GO TITLE HUNTING IN COLORADO. BOTH GREAT PLAYERS THAT COULDNT WIN IN THE CITY THEY PLAYED THEIR ENTIRE CAREER'S. TELL ME HOW THATS A BAD EXAMPLE.

shoebox,

I interpreted your 9:54 statement as if you were saying Jordan and Elway started their careers on top. Now that I reread it, I see what you are saying about the same team. I still DON'T agree with you though. I don't think anyone can argue that last year Bourque was no less than a 2nd team NHL All Star.

I won't rip you. I do feel that it does teach people that loyalty may not be the most glamorous option in sports but let's face it, he wasn't going to win a Championship in Boston so all the power to the guy.
