I just posted in another thread that it probably be around -400 vs. the Tigers and -225 if it were the twins. Yankees -260 vs the Tigers with home field advantage was a steal. Expect the series price to close around -350 or so..

Don't be so sure about Minny, Once we get past Santana their rotation is pretty weak, If we can split in Minny it might not even come to game 5

Randy Johnson was optimistic after a bullpen session that he will start Game 3 of the playoffs Friday night.

Johnson threw 41 pitches Sunday under the watchful eye of manager Joe Torre, Yankees pitching coach Ron Guidry and bullpen coach Joe Kerrigan.

"It was surprisingly good," Johnson said. "Everybody was more pleased than I was, so I guess that's a good thing. My only concern is a stiff back."

Torre was happy with Johnson's session and was confident the Big Unit will pitch against Minnesota or Detroit. Chien-Ming Wang will start Tuesday's opener and Mike Mussina will follow in Game 2 Wednesday.

"We were certainly were satisfied," Torre said. "It didn't look like he was restricted. We'll see how he feels tomorrow."

Torre originally expected Johnson to throw only 25 pitches, but the Big Unit went on to throw 41 -- his uniform number. Johnson is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Wednesday.

While Johnson didn't have full command of his pitches, Guidry was happy with what he saw.

"He threw a lot better as far as having not thrown in a week," Guidry said. "He got through mechanically speaking. He still felt a little stiff and I didn't expect him to be real fluid."

The bullpen session came a day after Johnson threw across the outfield grass.

Johnson last pitched on Sept. 23, when he gave up five runs and seven hits over six innings in an 8-0 loss at Tampa Bay.

The Big Unit was 17-10 with a career-high 5.00 ERA in 33 starts this season. His back lower stiffness began in September and increased throughout the month.

If Johnson can't pitch, Jaret Wright and Cory Lidle would start Game 3 and, if needed, Game 4.

Odds to win AL pennant: NYY -102. Seems like a good shot with that line up.

HG,
I saw San Diego at -135, not sure if that was the opener though. I wouldnt be so sure of the Yankees. These are 5 game series. Anything could happen. Their starting pitching doesnt exactly make you tremble.

I took + money on Oak and + money on Dodgers just for a few units. Just don't want to lay wood in playoffs.

Gathered these up for an article. Figured I'd post them here too...

RECORDS SINCE GAMES OF JULY 30TH

American League:
Oakland: 38-19
Minnesota: 36-23
NY Yankees: 36-24
Detroit: 25-33

National League:
Los Angeles: 38-19
NY Mets: 34-24
San Diego: 33-24
St. Louis: 25-32

RECORDS SINCE GAMES OF AUGUST 27TH

American League:
Minnesota: 20-13
NY Yankees: 20-13
Oakland: 19-13
Detroit: 13-18

National League:
San Diego: 22-10
Los Angeles: 20-12
NY Mets: 18-16
St. Louis: 14-18

The Mets have been coasting for several weeks, so their record may not matter much. Injuries will matter of course. The Yankees have had their division wrapped up for awhile too...but they still maintained a pace that matched the other hot teams who had to close strong to clinch their bids.

I'd bet its historically abnormal to have two different playoff teams who posted losing records over the two months leading up to the postseason.

The media has been focusing a lot on the Yankees...and the struggles of the AL Central slumpers. The California teams come in playing better ball than many realize I believe. Will be interesting to see what unfolds.

Would anyone have guessed that Oakland and the LA Dodgers had the best record in baseball the last two months?

The Angels had a better second half than any of the teams that made the playoffs by going 52-29 in their last 81 games. Yankees and Oakland were next best at 50-31. Detroit went 40-41 and St. Louis went 39-41 (they had a rainout that wasn't made up). Biggest shocks in the second half were Boston (36-45) and the White Sox (37-44). Both seemed like locks for the playoffs on July 1st. I imagine a lot of teams are happy the Angels didn't make it.

If you take out games against Seattle & Tampa Bay since July 30th (15 games, 14-1), Oakland is 24-18. Too tired right now to break down the whole thing, but their schedule doesn't look particularly difficult over the past two months.
