Default Former NBA Player Shackleford Arrested

By Associated Press

January 1, 2006, 6:52 PM EST

SMITHFIELD, N.C. -- Former NBA player Charles Shackleford was arrested on drug and weapon charges during a routine traffic stop.

The 39-year-old Shackleford, who played at North Carolina State and with four NBA teams in six seasons, was arrested in Johnston County on Saturday by a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper.

He faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of cocaine, Johnston County officials said Sunday. Shackleford, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., was released on $11,000 bond.

Andrea Spencer, 19, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested for speeding.

Shackleford is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Johnston County. Spencer, who was released on a $500 bond, is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 13.

Shackleford was suspended from N.C. State in 1986 because of poor grades, but was allowed to return. He was drafted in the second round in 1988 by the New Jersey Nets and later played with the Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves and before ending his NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets after the 1989-99 season.

Wasn't he also accused of point shaving while he was in college?

...and didn't all this happen under Jim Valvano?

Here's where my college degree in sociology comes in handy. Using my trusty propretary formula, I've determined that 40% of the NBA players would be in prison if they had lacked the skills to play basketball beyond the high school level.

N.C. STATE PROBE IS A SURPRISE TO BROWN

Article Appeared: March 2, 1990

Publication: Beacon Journal
Writer: Terry Pluto

Cavaliers rookie forward Chucky Brown strongly denied on Thursday, having any part in the alleged point-shaving scandal at North Carolina State.

The Greensboro Daily News and ABC-TV have reported that Chris Shackleford and three or four other Wolfpack players were involved in point shaving of a March 6, 1988, game between N.C. State and Wake Forest. The Wolfpack won 86-82, but they were a 15-point favorite.

`I never suspected anything until I heard about all this stuff the last few days,' said Brown.

``I know I wasn't in on it. They say that there were three or four other guys. Well, I wish they'd name those other guys so people would know it's not me.'

The Greensboro Daily News reported that in addition to Shackleford, other players involved were Bennie Bolton and Teviin Binns.

`We have heard several other names,' said Greensboro reporter Helen Ross. ' But we haven't heard a thing about Chucky Brown. We have no reason to believe that Chucky was involved. He had a very good personal reputation when he played at N.C. State.'

Brown does not deny the fact that some North Carolina State players may have conspired to shave points in a game.

`Maybe it happened and maybe it didn't, you really can't say for sure,' said Brown. `All I can say is that I didn't have anything to do with it. I don't know about some of the other guys.'

Brown said he watched the ESPN and ABC interviews with an unidentified N.C. State player saying that point-shaving was involved in the Wolfpack's 4- point victory over Wake Forest.

The unidentified player said that Shackleford, the Wolfpack's center, was in the middle of it. The Wake player Shackleford guarded, Ralph Kitley, scored a career-high 22 points. Shackleford scored 16. Kitley averaged seven points that season.

Shackleford is now with the New Jersey Nets. He also is being investigated for accepting close to $70,000 from an agent while still in college.

`All I know about that Wake Forest game is that I had 18 points and I think 10 rebounds (actually seven),' said Brown. `Wake had beaten us earlier in the season. It was a hard fought game. I know I had a good game.'

According to game stories in North Carolina papers, Brown was exceptional in that victory over Wake as he shot 8-fo0 from the field.

Brown did say he knew the player who spoke to ABC and ESPN.

`I don't want to say who it was, but that guy didn't play very much,' Brown said. `I was surprised that if something was going on, he'd be in on it.'

The Greensboro Daily News also reported that point-shaving also was involved in a 1986 N.C. State loss to Tampa.

`I don't remember much about that game except that we lost,' said Brown. Probably, the reason Brown's memory is hazy is that he hardly played, scoring six points in 16 minutes.

Brown said that he had not been contacted by any authorities or newspapers that are investigating the charges.

In fact, Brown also said that he didn't speak to author Peter Golenbock, whose 1989 book Personal Fouls charged that the N.C. State program was corrupt.

Brown is hardly mentioned in the book, and the few references portray him as a quiet, hard-working player.

The Cavs selected Brown in the second round of the 1989 draft. The 43rd pick overall, Brown now starts at small forward. Going into Thursday, night's game against the Denver Nuggets, he was averaging 8.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and shooting 49 percent in 20 minutes a night.

`We have looked into the situation and have reason to believe that Chucky was not involved in any wrongdoing at N.C. State,' said Cavs general manager Wayne Embry. `As far as we can tell, he is not the subject of any investigation. Before we drafted Chucky, we checked him and his family out and they are very good people.'

Thanks for the info and the chuckle.

Reminiscient of Ickey Woods' "I didn't do no nothing when I went to college"

Wow...who would have seen this coming. Didn't the dude break into a dorm room at NC State and rip off a bunch of stuff while he was there?

"Amphibious" - absolutely classic line.

Thought that was Chris Washburn but it may have been Chuckles Shackleford too.

I know Washburn was busted stealing a stereo. Still got drafted #3 by Golden State under the "you can't teach height" thinking.
