| Chargers hot team for betting in Vegas UNION-TRIBUNE October 9, 2005 The Chargers in Las Vegas are the one thing that town understands. They're "money." It has been flowing to those who have been chunking it on the Chargers and collecting on a team that since the start of last season is 15-2-3 against the wagering lines, including 8-0-2 on the road. "Last week the Chargers were a very popular bet," said Dave Tuley, the sports gaming correspondent for the Daily Racing Form in Las Vegas. New England opened as a 6-point favorite, but by kickoff the Patriots had been bet down to 4 points. The Chargers won straight up, as the expression has it, 41-17. Bob Scucci, sports book director at the Stardust, which has been likened to the New York Stock Exchange of sports gaming, said this to the Las Vegas Review-Journal: "I thought the Chargers were for real last year when they started covering all those games in a row. They lost in the playoffs, but that had a lot to do with coaching. "Drew Brees is looking as good as ever, and he's going to be a star. LaDainian Tomlinson is looking fantastic. They have the running game, passing game and a good defense. But they really have a tough schedule." It continues here tomorrow evening with a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. On a weekend when eight teams are favored by 3 points, the Chargers are among them. "A solid 3," said Tuley, meaning that all the shops in Las Vegas have San Diego as a 3-point favorite. The Steelers are coming off a bye, as Baltimore, Detroit, Houston and Washington were last week. The Ravens and the Redskins won, the Lions and the Texans lost, but all four teams covered. A year ago, teams coming off byes were only 15-17, but they were 19-13 in 2003. This year they are 2-2. |

| Thanks for the article Clevfan. I remember when Pittsburgh was the hot team in the NFL and Phoenix was the hot team in the NBA last year. The Vegas line never moved off of the Super Bowl and NBA favorites (New England and San Antonio) even as road teams. It will be interesting to watch the Chargers in the coming weeks, especially individual game spreads versus overall season odds. BTW -- lived in San Diego from 1978 to 1993. Had Charger tix from 1978 until 1983 (funny how marriage alters what you can spend $$$ on |
