Jockey and trainer suspended, accused of "race fixing"

(Muskegon, October 7, 2005, 3:53 p.m.) A jockey and trainer at Great Lakes Downs in Muskegon are in trouble with the state.

State racing officials have put Roberto Perez on indefinite suspension for betting on a horse other than the one he jockeyed.

State racing officials say Perez walked away with $5,000 following the fourth race on Tuesday.

It is not against the rules for jockeys to bet on a horse, but it has to be the horse that they are riding.

When racing officials found out Perez had allegedly violated that rule, they launched an investigation.

That investigation determined Perez bet on a number of horses and a number of combinations to place. That helped him take the super-trifecta, which requires the better to get the first four finishers in a row.

Racing officials tell 24 Hour News 8 that they are not done with their investigation.

While the state is holding one other ticket on the super trifecta that night, pending the investigation, officials say it does not appear the person that placed that bet was involved with Perez.

Meantime, a trainer that cashed the winning wager for Perez is also suspended.

I'm surprised jockeys are allowed to bet in the USA...trainers and owners yes...but in every racing jurisdictions in the world, jockey betting on a race is a no-no

when it comes to picking winners, most jockeys come up a little short.

Jockey suspended for seven years after betting on own horse

(Muskegon County, November 3, 2005, 12:13 p.m.) A jockey who officials say bet on his own horse during a race at Great Lakes Downs has been barred from racing for seven years.

Michigan racing officials say Roberto Perez violated state rules by betting on several horses, none of them his own, during a race in October at the track in Fruitport Township.

Jockeys are not allowed to bet on other horses in a race that they are riding in.

24 Hour News 8 has learned the state racing commission has suspended Perez from racing anywhere in the country for seven years. He will also have to pay a $7,000 fine.

A trainer that tried to cash the winning ticket for Perez has been suspended for 60 days and will pay a $1,000 fine.

We have 'jockeys races' in the uk every now and again ... nobody knows when they are coming, but they are easy to spot by the betting patterns on betfair and the way the race is run.
The training fraternity is also very close, so when there is, for example, an all weather race featuring say trainer a (5/4 favourite), trainer, b (9/4 2nd favourite) and trainer c (7/2 3rd favourite), any price the rest, they know the result before the horses reach the paddock. What chance has an honest punter got? (answer = lots in the 90% of the straight races in the UK)

Regards,

Why wouldnt he bet it offshore. No chance of investigation, and his tickets wouldnt go into the pool thus getting a better payout as there would be less tickets in parimutual.
