FARMINGTON, Pa. (AP) -- David Toms was rushed to a hospital after developing a rapid heartbeat during the 84 Lumber Classic on Thursday and was later taken by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.

Toms was even par through nine holes -- he started on No. 18 -- before being taken off the course on a stretcher, according to PGA Tour officials. He was taken first to Uniontown Hospital, then was flown to Pittsburgh's UPMC-Presbyterian University Hospital.

Toms' caddie, Scott Gneiser, told The Associated Press that Toms was airlifted to Pittsburgh because ``his heart rate went way up,'' but that he was ``doing better now'' after a series of tests. The hospital did not immediately comment on his condition.

Adam Young, the director of the David Toms Foundation, told PGATour.com in an e-mail that Toms was in stable condition.

The 38-year-old Toms, an 11-time Tour winner, was playing in the $4.4 million 84 Lumber tournament as a tuneup for next week's Presidents Cup in Virginia. The 2001 PGA Championship winner also won the Accenture Match Play Classic earlier this year, and is fourth on the 2005 money list with earnings of $3,656,213.

This is the second time this week one of golf's best-known players was rushed to a hospital with a heart-related problem. Meg Mallon was taken to an Indianapolis hospital on Sunday after her heart began beating as many as 290 times a minute shortly after the closing ceremony at the Solheim Cup in Carmel, Ind.

Toms taken to the hospital for observation Sep. 15, 2005

David Toms was taken to the hospital for observation Friday after developing what the Associated Press reported was a rapid heartbeat during the first round of the 84 LUMBER Classic.

According to Adam Young, the director of the David Toms Foundation, Toms was treated by paramedics on the first hole -- his 10th of the day -- and taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. He was then airlifted to Pittsburgh’s UPMC-Presbyterian University Hospital for further tests and evaluation.

“He is in stable condition and has spoken with his family on several occasions,” Young said in an e-mail.

Toms, who won the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year, is currently ranked fourth on the PGA TOUR money list. The 11-time PGA TOUR champ is a member of the U.S. Team that will play in next week’s Presidents Cup.

Tough couple of weeks for him I guess-- he is an LSU boy-- wonder if he still lives there.

Why is everyone being so tight-lipped about his condition, including Toms himself? I've looked all over for a story about this and can't find anything that mentions what exactly happened. Just now on ESPNnews they had a quote from Toms himself but it only said he had a problem with his heart....well, duh, even I figured that out. Without the hospital even saying it, it is obvious that Toms had an episode of SVT, supraventricular tachycardia, which includes things like atrial fibrillation/flutter, paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, atrio-ventricular nodal tachycardia, and other weird arrhythmias. But none of them are fatal, all are treatable, and none will preclude Toms from getting back to the PGA tour shortly. But you'd think he had a STD (sexually transmitted disease) the way they are handling the story.
