Big stack sitouts- wtf?

I see it more and more frequently lately... someone double or triples up and next thing you know they are sitting out. It's annoying as hell, putting a good chunk of chips out of play, and doesn't seem like a great strategy to me. Explain pro's and cons, please?

they know they will make the money if the triple up sit out and wait while all they are doing is wasting their chips in the blind and most of the time if they get good hands they will jump in for the hand
