One thing for damn sure if Perfect Drift can circle 5 wide and win here, I will lose money.

LavaMan looks tough=should be close to the front and is really the only near front runner with enough talent to win-course everytime I think that in this race Dare & Go's rally comes to mind.

all the other main contenders look to get trips from hell.

A DRF public capper's thoughts-

1. LAVA MAN 2. SUPER FROLIC 3. SURF CAT

The fastest in the field, and the only recent Grade 1 winner, LAVA MAN figures to win if he duplicates his Hollywood form. He has improved with blinkers and P. Val; none of the others come close. But the Del Mar main track is something new, and if the chalk misfires then longshot SUPER FROLIC has a chance to upset. A 10-for-29 shipper from the East, his up-front running style is the type that usually plays well in this race. His stable is on a roll, he has worked well over this track, and aside from the favorite, the field is fairly evenly matched. The mile and a quarter distance is not a major issue at Del Mar, where even a good miler can stay the trip. SURF CAT has been running well against small, soft 3-year-old fields, but he spots an improving pattern and gets a seven-pound weight break. His best Beyer Figure is not close to the 117 Pacific Classic par; the best route fig by SURF CAT is 105. CHOCTAW NATION will rally late; PERFECT DRIFT is usually in the hunt; BORREGO should appreciate the surface change and he also will be finishing.

Another guy's thoughts:

Del Mar - Pacific Classic (G1)
By ART GROPPER

Polish Times
Claimed for 35K, he displayed an improvement on turf and shows good back Beyers on the main track; this is obviosuly a very ambitious placement, considering you could get have had him for $62,500 only 11 days ago; would be a surprise.

Choctaw Nation
Did not get the greatest setup in the San Diego, but still blasted his way home to make it 2-for-3 over the track; 4th in this race last year when behind Perfect Drift, he had no answers for Lava Man in June, but the last start had to help his confidence for the rematch with Lava Man.

Borrego
Continues to finish behind similar riavls and was a beaten 4-5 betting favorite when facing much lesser last summer in lone prior start at Del Mar; outfinished Congrats for the place money in latest, but have him ranked a notch below the top contenders.

Lava Man
What a claim!; taken for 50K in a Del Mar turf claimer last August, he is the 'now' horse, crushing the field in the Grade 1 HOL Gold Cup and before that was sharp victor in a Grade 2 at HOL; maybe he finally gets some respect at the betting windows after demolishing a good group in latest?; hard to go past if runs anything close to latest; the pick.

Surf Cat
6-for-6 in the exacta lifetime, he tackles older foes after winning via a perfect trip, sitting right off the speed in the Swaps; gets a 7-pound weight swift from all but Island Fashion and his Beyers certainly fit with the elite of the field; gets extra points in the Eclipse balloting if he beats older horses in a G1; could have shipped east to face straight 3yos, making this a very interesting placement.

Super Frolic
Ships across country off a DEL 100K stakes loss; been working strongly at Del Mar, but this is clearly a rough spot for a horse who's lone win this year came at odds-on in a minor Calder stakes; prefer others.

Musique Toujours
70-1 winner of the Sunshine Millions Classic, he hasn't fired back to that one and was not within range of similar in the 'Gold Cup; gets the upset-win rider back for this and has won over the track previously; off latest seems a notch below.

Congrats
He's been good since he returned from Dubai, but looked like he was going in slow motion when Lava Man ran right by him in the HOL Gold Cup; consistent sort always seems to fire, so hard to leave him out of the exotics mix underneath.

Island Fashion
Hasn't won since October, 2004, and she will face the boys following a pair of near misses with G1 girls, the latest on the turf, where she was making her grass debut; didn't see enough in the Big Cap to get us excited about this spot against the boys despite the weigh break from all but Surf Cat.

Oceanus (BRZ)
Late runner could use more distance, but leaps way up in class for this off the longshot near miss with much lesser; not having a 100 Beyer on the form is a big knock and he's been off the board in all 3 U.S. stakes starts, pass.

Ace Blue (BRZ)
Hung tough late over the track, but could not hold off Choctaw Nation and spit the bit vs. Lava Man 2-back; speedster drew all the way outside, so must be used to get over before the 1st turn; know him early.

Perfect Drift
3 Million-plus dollar earner received a Chicago confidence builder in last and likes this surface, finishing 2nd in this event last year; always seems to fire, grinding it out in the lane until the wire; little concerned about the far outside starting slot, but clearly fits with this bunch off latest try and we know he has an affinity for the track.

All opinions welcomed-
this race has not been good to me over the yrs-will be betting it lightly no matter which way I go.

If I can get the ML(9/2) or better on Choctaw Nation, I'll be making a play...appears to be fit and loves the track.......am looking to beat Lava Man, but cannot play Perfect Drift from gate 12

Tough race to call as it is a very competitive field. Lava Man was good to me last time, but this time his price will be too short and I think he faces a lot of pace pressure on a track where closing is possible. This leads me to betting longshots for value like Borrego or Super Frolic. Also, there is an hour and a half run to the first turn, so even Perfect Drift can get position, his last run that would be competitive in this field was in this race last year.

I may head over there today. I think they have a guaranteed 1 mil for the pick six, not that I'll win the damn thing.

Lava Man-Choctaw-Perfect Drift will be the 3 favs in some order. My 2 longshots are Borrego and Congrats, now I just got to figure out how to play these 5, can't afford a 5 horse box, I really think the trifecta comes from these 5. Maybe I'll play the 10 cent super with these five?

Mikey, why is #8 Commanding Creek 15-1 with 8MTP?

I think I may be forced to knock him down to 13-1 ish
