| I have both an SUV and a car that gets almost 40 mpg. On a monthly basis I chastise myself for continuing to own the SUV. When compared on an overall cost basis with the other car it is an indefensible decision. Their are people who need trucks, and four wheel drive is very nice in inclement weather, however overall vehicle/operational cost for the average person is outrageous. At $40k for an Expedition or Tahoe, or $50k for a Caddy what most people don't realize is that they are subsidizing a failing industry(american automakers), and enriching an industry that is sure to take us to war(oil/gas). We cannot come close to producing what we consume, yet individuals continue to make decisions that are collectively disastrous for the whole. We are living in a massive financial bubble and it has affected everything, but most dangerously it has affected the auto industry. It has allowed escalating prices in the face of terrible internal demographics(american car companies have 3 retirees for every worker, their pension statistics are mind boggling), and has put people into car payments that just ten years ago were house payments. Gasoline is one of the many potential pin pricks that threaten the bubble. |

Not sure where you get your data about it being unsafe. Consumer Reports and the NTSB rate numerous SUV's as being VERY safe. For this reason, my wife drives my kid around in our 6000 lb SUV. If you're in a wreck, would you rather be in a 6000 lb SUV or a 3000lb sedan? BTW, fuel prices being so high has VERY little to do with the number of SUVs on the road.....

| the high number of suvs on the road does have something to do with the price. the suvs get poor fuel economy which creates a spike in the demand. if someone buys a hummer and gets rid of their honda accord, they will be using twice the amount of gasoline for the same amount of driving. |
