Degen, most of the "play money" rooms are a joke.....people are unrealisticly aggressive, and there is really no benefit.

My suggestion would be to get in the Wpex $5 single table tourney games....it's a cheap way to find out how things really work.

DG

My suggestion is PLAY PLAY MONEY first

Play Money in Pokerstars is not a total Joke.
THE reason why I say this, because on EBAY they SELL PLAY Money CHIPS for pokerstars.

THe lower level game are a joke, but the higher level is very reasonable.
YOU CANNOT play at the high Level games UNLESS u buy chips from EBAY or WIN it little by little.

If they sell play money chips, How is it PLAY MONEY?

I agree with TT, better to play $5 games, than games where 4 players go all in every hand.

here is an ebay sale

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=187&item=816388744 0&rd=1

There use to be plenty but Pokerstars has cracked down a bit.

The players mostly sell it online now.

dg, We will be getting something together soon. Russ as well as 10 or 12 others expressed an interest to learn. We were inquiring at Wpex but they had some new promo's just starting up and things were chaotic. There are .5/.10 FIXED (or "limit") games at places, where you can play on $5 for hours. If you play no limit, even for small blinds prices you go through the bucks a lot faster, since beginners are tempted to chase, and if you are playing no limit a guy could bet his entire boodle at any time. So imo, fixed is the way to go until you have the basics down. We will get something going soon!!

Degen, I agree with tt, if your interest is in tourneys $5 at wpex or pokerworld are good places to see a lot of hands cheap. If your interest is ring games, then stick to low limit fixed as low limit NL can still cost u a lot of $$$. In low limit games if you only play pockets that total 20 or better, you won't go too far wrong and will learn a lot from watching other players.

TD

Here is what you do-it has worked for probably over 2 dozen people who have sought advice how to get started-

pick a site that has micro limit tables,

maybe .25/.50 or even lower-most do-

make a deposit-deposit at least 70 times the bigger bet, so if you plan on trying .25/.50 deposit $35-

move up to the next level as soon as you have 70 of the big bets for it-so if starting at .25/.50 when get to $70 move to .50/1.00.

when you go broke come back here and tell me at what level and I will tell you where to go next.

if you are a real beginner, meaning not understanding the play, or the hand ranking etc...start with play money until you feel comfortable to follow the above-use the play money strictly to get a feel for how online poker operates, the play except as noted above(UB big pt games are very good too FWIW) is rarely commensurate with real money.

Like TA said, only play in 'funny money' games until you are comfortable with how the game itself is played (blinds, table position, etc.) Once you know the basics, play REAL money games. Playing in funny money games will instill bad habits in your game. You'll play too loose and play WAY too many hands.

If you decide to signup at a real money site...be sure you go through an affiliate that will kickback part of the commission they get for signing you up.

Here is the best affiliate I've found:
(Mod edit....can't do that here hockey)
Use upgrade code "PSOUPGRADE" to get a total of $190 for signing up/playing at Party or Pacific Poker.

If you decide to signup, send me a private message or email.... I get $20 for referring you and would be happy to shoot $10 back your way.

Actually your better off not playing the for fun tables. I can't see any value in them, because you don't get anything out of them.

Forget that joke poker room at WSEX as well.

I would suggest you become a member of Poker Stars or Party Poker. Play in the free rolls they have going on all day.

Nothing like learning in a real tournament that actually pays something out if you do well enough to get in the money.

It costs you nothing and you get real live playing experience.

And if you really want to get in the game with real cash, you can play the 1/2 cent tables or nickel dime games, you won't win a lot, but you are unlikely to lose a bunch either.

Good luck in learning, and your playing experience.
