The kick return was to the 31 of Seattle with 2:21 left, and KC still has a timeout. The goal should be to score, and get the ball back to Seattle for their first offensive play, with 2:01 remaining, so that you can use the 2 minute warning, and your last timeout to give you the ball back with a little over a minute left.
Option A: throw 1 ball into the endzone, burn about 9 seconds, perhaps 10. 2:11 remaining. If you don't score, kick the field goal. Lets say that burns 6 seconds. 2:05 left. An onside, won't likely burn more than 4 seconds. If you feel safer, kick it out of the back of the endzone. Bottom line, give seattle the ball back with at least 2:01, and you don't have to rely on the onside.
Seattle runs a play. 2 minute warning. Seattle runs 2nd down. Time out. 1: 52 ish left. Seattle runs a play. 145 left. 40 second runoff. 105 left. Punt. 57 seconds left.
Option B: Just kick the field goal on 1st down. That leaves 2:15, more than enough time to either kick off deep, or kick onside, and give the ball to seattle, down 1 score, with about 2:10 to 2:15 left.
Seattle runs a play, call time out. Still 2:01 or more left.
Seattle runs 2nd down. 2 minutes left.
Seattle runs 3rd down, and 40 second run off. 1:13 left.
Seattle punts. 1:05 left.
If they just kick the field goal right away on first down, if they can get a 3 and out, which granted, they've struggled to do, they would get the ball back with 1:05 remaining, and there was still the chance for the onside.
IF you're going to run a play at all, it should be either in the endzone, or just a play to the sideline, to improve your odds of a field goal. You either take a shot at the endzone on 1st down, or kick a fg on 1st or 2nd.
Those options give you a chance to get the ball back if the onside is unsuccessful. Stupid coaching. These days with the onside rules, successful onside is about 3%. It's stupid to think it'll work. You have to plan to get that field goal on 1st or 2nd down, and leave about 2:05 or more on the clock, going into the onside.
I like Plan A the best, because you never know with an onside, if you're going to get some sort of pile up, that burns 5 or 6 seconds.
Just kick the 48 yd fg right away on 1st down.
"If life throws you curve balls, sit on it, and put it in the 2nd deck"..... yeah, well, that's nice, but I could never hit a damn curve ball.
