I'll be at the Husker BYU game this weekend. I am a lifelong husker fan, but this is my first Husker home game. The wife bought us 6 tickets for my 50th birthday, so I get to cross that off my bucket list.

In my opinion Hill is the difference. You can expose BYU through the air, but Nebraska doesn't have the passing game for that, and armstrong is very mediocre. Should be a decent amount of scoring but a straight up BYU win is probably in the cards. I'll be having a ton of fun either way. 34-27 cougars.

It should be noted that Riley had trouble in openers. This isn't Oregon St, but the beavers lost games to Sacramento st 29-28 in 2011, Eastern Washington in 2013, and trailed portland st at half time 14-13 last year. I would play BYU first half on that premise alone.

The huskers should play looser under Riley than Pelini in general, as Pelini was a screamer, but I'm not sure the huskers have the defensive athletes this year to shut anyone down. Not to mention the Huskers are missing their young sensational wide receiver for 1/2 the season. He was the number 2 punt returner in the country last season.

Why in the world didn't South Carolina kick a field goal and take a 7 point lead???

I would NOT bet the huskers Truck. They're missing their top receiver for half the season, who was also the 2nd best punt return man in the country last year. They've lost Ameer, and Kenny Bell. One of their starting linebackers is suspended for the game, and they are hurting there already. BYU has a very solid chance of winning this game outright.

It's hard to believe not long ago the Texas Longhorns were a good team.

***FINALBYU 33 NEB 28

Just got back from a weekend in Lincoln, here's my take:

Regarding the game, it's yet another example of a team defending the hail mary with 3 rushers. If you watch a slow replay of almost any successful hail mary, 90% of the time, you will see 3 rushers, and a couple defensive players well out of the play, standing around waiting for someone else to make a play.

This is the way you defend the hail mary: Don't give the QB time to wait for the players to get down the field and set up. You create the perception that you are going to rush 3, take one or two guys who are matched up left, have them back peddle, a step or two, and then bring them on a delayed blitz. The O-line typically commits 6 blockers to double team each of the 3 rushers, and has a rolling pocket to the QB's right (assuming he's right handed). Thus, by bringing a delayed blitz, the lineman have already made their commitment, and the QB is rolling right into the blitz. You want to bring the blitz from the defensive left side, or offensive right side, and push the QB to his off side throwing the football. In general, his receivers will set up in the right side of the endzone, and now the QB is running to the wrong side of the field, and would have to make one hell of an off-balance, against his body, throw. It's not going to end with the success we've seen.

I'll give credit to BYU. They brought two of their big receivers to the back of the endzone, and then brought the 3rd in late, at the front. It's designed to take the bulk of the defenders deep, and leave the other guy at the front of the goal line with less interference. If he goes up for a jump ball, there are two players behind him to catch a deflection, but in this case he was so poorly defended he could catch the ball in his stomach. You will see one player completely out of the play, coming in from several yards away, well late on the play. He may as well have been blitzing.

BUT!!!! This is NOT where the huskers lost this game.

Their final drive they left 6, 6, 6, 5, and 4 on the clock with each snap of the ball on running clocks. I've seen it over and over again the last few years with these huddle at the line offenses. They snap the ball WAY TOO EARLY in late game situations. The huskers needed about 3 first downs to kill the clock, and got it. But they mismanaged the clock. Even the missed field goal was snapped with 4 seconds on the clock. If you snap the ball with 1 or even 2 seconds on each of those plays, there is 17 less seconds for BYU to run their offense. Instead of 48 seconds from their 24, they would have had 31 or less. It's a world of difference and in this case it cost the huskers the ball game.

Guys like Urban Meyer, and Nick Saban micromanage their games right down to little details like that. Apparently Mike Riley doesn't. But then I knew that going in.

I had a great time this weekend, but nothing like a hail mary loss to suck the wind out of a post game celebration.

Memorial Stadium was buzzing (and the hamburger pizza was awesome), and the end was a total buzz kill.

Nebraska brought no heat on Taysom Hill the entire first half, if that continues, they'll get picked apart by any team with a decent passing offense. Huskers are lucky to play in the big ten, they would get slaughtered by Baylor, TCU etc.
