Default How do you handle losing streaks? (No bad beat stories, I promise)

Everything I do is wrong.

(The few times I actually do something right, I get out-drawn!)

I think you guys know that I'm not the type who is constantly moaning about bad beats and bad luck. I don't need a complete attitude adjustment.

It's just that weeks like this are the reason I'm keeping my day job.

I'm not looking for a pep talk. I could use some advice, though.

Should I keep my nose to the grindstone? Or take a break? My self-confidence takes a big hit during stretches like this. AM I probably playing as poorly as I sometimes think I am?

I've busted out of three tournaments tonight in the first round. I NEVER do that! In cash games, I haven't booked a win in over a dozen sessions.

Any advice?

Thanks.

Bitch and moan about bad beats like I do

Cheaper than a therapist LOL

Other than that, I have always found taking a break to be helpful. You come back to the game eyes wide open and refeshed.

i'll keep my observations and comments to holdem only. in poker, especially holdem, one can get the best of it and lose for an extended period of time and still be within normal statistical expectations (that's why one needs a decent sized bankroll or really good credit). a couple of random thoughts may give you some insight. due to their nature, tournaments are high fluctuations with long losing periods quite normal. in live games if you are getting beat mainly on the river and some on the turn means you are playing good, but just running bad. i would take a look at my own play in live games and see if 1) i'm being aggressive enough, 2) calling too many raises 3) paying off too many hands 4) playing hands from the correct position 5) giving my opponents free or cheap cards to beat me. when one runs bad, one should either tighten up on the starting hand requirements and/or go to lower stakes. it's tough for me to give you more specific input viewing the general nature of your post, i hope this little bit helps.

take an extended break if you know your playing too much...i was playing anywhere from 5-12hours a day (there were days, id play 20 straight hours) for over a year and about 2months ago, i hit a fu-cking brick wall, like you read about....i took the last 6 weeks off...its funny b/c i stopped reading and posting on this and other poker forums...id watch the wsop on espn but i rarely played (only a couple live tourney's my family runs and even in those, id make it to the final 5 players and either bust out 1 short of the money or just in the money and make very small money, while i watched my brother, who i taught make 1st and 2nd and walk with over 400)...i was completely away from the online game during this period.......

when i hit my wall it was like every coin flip, i would lose and every decent hand i would have would get beat by a bigger hand. I was away for so long, PP actually GAVE me $100 to play with in my account...i ended up losing that the other day and proceeded to take the weekend off...and i just started playing again online today...my 1st deposit and im playing very small stakes trying to build slowly...

sometimes you KNOW you need a break...i was so heavily relying on my poker winnings to pay my bills and spending money etc, i actually started turning into a monster almost, my gf would come home from work and id be playing and someone would lay a ridiculous beat on me, and id literally be swearing and screaming at the computer...i had basically had enough of it and whats when i pulled the plug....started doing other things...and going to work A LOT more....

Take up a new game for a while-your mind will appreciate the stimulation and you will quickly return to prime form in hold'em.

I took a few days off. That didn't help. Things seemed to be worse!

So tonight, I dropped WAY down in limits. That seems to have helped a lot!

Thanks to all for the advice.

5left im about tied for low with this other player around 22K

AK, blinds are 1/2k...i go all in...get 1 caller....AK vsAQ...flop comes...K (good for me)....Q....5...im like ok i got them still....turn a Q and im out in 5th....the guy who beat me went on to win...if i win that hand im at around 50k and ready to really strike around 2-3rd in chips...

since i got boucned from that tourney...i took the 35 and started playing 10+1 sng's at empire...

1st was a 3rd +$9

2nd one, 1st hand i get delt 66...flop comes 68Q....i check, the raiser, after its checked around bets out 65 and get 1 caller...there's now 265 in the middle and 130 on the table and thats good for me so i go all in, thinking maybe the raiser has a solid hand like KK or AA or AQ and i will get a call, if not...im happy with the 400 chips...original raiser folds, 2nd guy who called the 65 calls my ALL IN...turns over 9/10....im like WTF is that...river was a 7 and im out with trips to his miracle str8...on the 1st hand....i was so fu-cking pissed....anyways... its -$11

3rd tourney 1st +39
4th tourney 1st +39
5th tourney 2nd+19

and im currently on my 6th one...its still early on.....
