Van der Sloot seeking reduced sentence in Peru: lawyer
LIMA (Reuters) - Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch man who has confessed to killing a young woman in Peru and been linked to the mysterious disappearance of a young American woman in Aruba, hopes to win a reduced sentence of just several years in prison, his lawyer said on Tuesday.
Maximo Altez says he has filed a motion in court arguing that his client was overcome with "violent emotion" and did not plan to kill Stephany Flores, 21, in a Lima hotel room on May 30.
That tactic would potentially reduce his sentence to three to five years, less than the 25 years that prosecutors could seek under charges of aggravated homicide, in which assailants plan their crime.
According to Altez, Van der Sloot became enraged after Flores found reports on his computer that showed he was a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba during a high school graduation trip in 2005.
The Holloway case has received intense media coverage in the United States, but no one has been convicted for her disappearance from the Caribbean island resort.
Van der Sloot was considered a prime suspect and arrested in 2005 but released for lack of evidence. Her family has criticized Dutch authorities for the lack of progress in the case.
Van der Sloot fled to Chile after Flores' death but was soon captured and returned to Peru. He has not yet testified. Flores was seen in a casino with Van der Sloot before her body was found in a hotel room registered under his name.
Joran van der Sloot to Plead Guilty to Killing Stephany Flores Ramirez
Joran van der Sloot will plead guilty to killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez in Peru last May, but will argue temporary insanity, according to reports.
The Dutchman, 23, will try for a reduced sentence using the "violent emotion" defense, his lawyer, Maximo Altez, told The Associated Press.
The lawyer argues that Van der Sloot killed Ramirez on May 30 after becoming enraged when he realized she had looked at his laptop and learned of his connection to missing American teen Natalee Holloway, who disappeared from the island of Aruba in 2005.
Ramirez, a Peruvian business student, was found bludgeoned to death in a Lima hotel room. Van der Sloot stands accused of first-degree murder – in Peru that means a 15- to 35-year sentence if convicted. But if his insanity defense holds up, Van der Sloot could serve only 20 months of a 3-5-year sentence, Altez told the AP.

An attorney for Ramirez's family has spoken out on the possible plea, saying they want van der Sloot to serve a minimum of 25 years in prison.
"The manner in which the suspect killed Stephany evidenced disproportionate violence," attorney Edward Alvarez said. "The autopsy found the young woman was bludgeoned and asphyxiated."

Joran van der Sloot Reportedly Linked to Peruvian Prison Stabbings - FoxNews.com
Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, has been accused of stabbing three fellow inmates inside a Peruvian jail, Dutch media reported Wednesday.
Van Der Sloot, 23, is behind bars awaiting trial over the murder of a Peruvian woman.
According to Dutch magazine Panorama, he has been involved in a string of violent confrontations inside Lima's Castro Castro prison, one of which left another inmate requiring emergency treatment.
Van der Sloot's lawyer has denied the allegations, describing them as "fabricated."
Panorama also alleged that van der Sloot has been a heavy drug user while in jail. "He has been put into solitary confinement several times but comes out even more angry," a source told the magazine.
The article was followed up by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf Wednesday. It said it had put the allegations to his lawyer, Maximo Altez, who dismissed them. "There are bad intentions to do harm to Joran," Altez said. "But he actually wants to change his life and goes to church."
Van der Sloot has been held in custody since June 2010 over the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores. The Dutch national is accused of robbing and killing Flores in his Lima hotel room in May 2010.
Van der Sloot remains the chief suspect in the disappearance of Holloway, an 18-year-old student from Mountain Brook, Ala., who disappeared in May 2005 during a high school graduation trip to Aruba.

Joran van der Sloot Reportedly Gets Girlfriend Pregnant Behind Bars - FoxNews.com
Joran van der Sloot -- the Dutch man accused in the murder of a Peruvian woman and the main suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway -- has gotten his girlfriend pregnant while behind bars, the Daily Mail reports.
The U.K. paper reports that van der Sloot's girlfriend was frequently seeing him for conjugal visits, going to his jail cell to do "chores" and bringing him candy.
His girlfriend reportedly works at the same Peruvian casino where he met Stefany Flores, the woman he is accused of murdering in June 2010.
Ricardo Flores, Stefany's father, has asked officials at the Miguel Castro Castro Jail to investigate the conjugal visits.
Van der Sloot is accused of first-degree murder in Flores' death and could get up to 35 years in prison. He confessed to the murder last year, saying he strangled Flores and asphyxiated her with his shirt. He claims Flores attacked him first.
He is also the main suspect behind Holloway's disappearance in Aruba in 2005. The 18-year-old Alabama teen went missing during a high school graduation trip to the Caribbean island.
Van der Sloot was the last person to have seen Holloway alive. Her body has yet to be found.

Report: Joran van der Sloot Stabbed 3 Fellow Inmates
Murder suspect Joran van der Sloot has stabbed at least three other inmates during his incarceration at a Peruvian prison, a magazine reports.
The Peruvian magazine Panorama alleges that van der Sloot stabbed three prisoners, with at least one victim needing emergency medical care. The magazine also reports that the Dutchman is a heavy drug user who has "been put into solitary confinement several times but comes out even more angry," a source told Panorama.
Van der Sloot has been charged with murdering a Peruvian woman and with attempting to extort money from the parents of missing U.S. teen Natalee Holloway.
He is also a longtime suspect in Holloway's 2005 disappearance in Aruba. He has been in police custody since June, accused of the May 30 slaying of Stephany Flores, a Peruvian business student who was found dead in van der Sloot's hotel room in Lima on June 2.
The Dutch native's lawyer, Maximo Altez, has not publicly addressed the latest allegations. Panorama reported that he has not denied his client was involved.
Meanwhile, Lifetime Television plans to premier the original movie "Justice for Natalee Holloway" on May 9. The latest film is a follow-up to the Lifetime Movie Network original "Natalee Holloway," which premiered last year. This most recent installment will focus on the ongoing mystery of what happened to the Alabama teen, as well as van der Sloot's alleged extortion of her mother and his arrest in Peru.
The film will be followed by a sneak peek of Lifetime's new true-life series "Vanished With Beth Holloway." The one-hour program, which will begin airing in its regularly scheduled time period on May 11, explores firsthand real-life mysteries of families who have been victimized by unsolved abductions, disappearances and unspeakable crimes.
According to Lifetime, Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother, will offer "a uniquely empathetic point of view to the loved ones that have been left behind."
So the dude is in jail and has stabbed 3 people and gotten his girlfriend pregnant. So much for Peruvian Jails being so tough
Someone needs to "take care of him". Menace to society comes to mind. Is there any doubt he would re-offend if he gets out? None in my mind.
Mom had no idea dad was filing
Joran van der Sloot to become a father behind bars
Report: Joran van der Sloot to become a father behind bars – This Just In - CNN.com Blogs
It appears Joran van der Sloot is about to add a new role to his résumé - father.
Van der Sloot became well-known around the world for the murder of Stephany Flores in Peru and for being arrested twice, but never charged, in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba.
Now the Dutch citizen may be preparing to welcome a new child into the world while he is serving 28 years in a Peruvian prison for Flores' death, according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, which says it confirmed the news over the phone with van der Sloot himself.
The mother, identified only as "Leidi" by the newspaper, met van der Sloot in prison and became pregnant after an unsupervised visit with the jailed 28-year-old, the paper said.
Van der Sloot's lawyer said he did not confirm the pregnancy, as stated by the newspaper. But Maximo Altez told Mayra Cuevas of "In Session" that Leidi is registered as van der Sloot’s girlfriend at Piedras Gordas Prison and they have had conjugal visits. Van der Sloot can receive visitors once or twice a month. Altez says he met Leidi in prison through another inmate.
This isn't the first time rumors have swirled around van der Sloot's love life since he's been in the spotlight. Earlier reports that he was getting married behind bars were knocked down as false.
Van der Sloot admitted to killing Flores, 21, in his Lima hotel room in 2010. The judges gave him a sentence two years short of the 30-year maximum. They ordered that he be expelled from Peru at the end of his sentence and required him to pay about $74,500 in reparations to Flores' relatives.
Van der Sloot confessed to robbery in addition to murder, admitting that he stole Flores' belongings, including more than $300 in local currency, credit cards and the victim's van as a means to leave the country. He fled to Chile and was arrested a few days later.
Another van der Sloot attorney, Jose Luis Jimenez, has said that his client was under special stress the day of the 2010 murder, which marked five years after Holloway, an 18-year-old from Alabama, disappeared while vacationing on Aruba.
Investigators have said they believe van der Sloot killed Flores after she found something related to the Holloway case on his computer while visiting him in his hotel room. The two met while van der Sloot was in Lima for a poker tournament.
He was caught in a taxi near the Chilean central coastal city of Vina del Mar.
Holloway's body has not been found, and no one has been charged in relation to the case in Aruba.
Natalee's mom to van der Sloot: 'I can't close the book'
In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted van der Sloot after allegations that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway. Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus information about the whereabouts of Holloway's remains in exchange for the money, according to the indictment.
He was allegedly given $25,000, which authorities say he used to travel to Peru for the poker tournament.
If found guilty of extortion, he could be sentenced to 25 years in prison.
the guy killed 2 people is in jail and still gets laid, wtf am i doing wrong pbalz
not as disgusting as the sentence for that guy in norway - kills a ton of kids at camp, shows no remorse and gets 22 years or something like that.
And I bet she is actually hot. Would seem to fit this twisted ass story. Wasn't he supposed to be gutted after 3 days in Peruvian prison? He might end up with Scarface like status by end of all this.
I hope someone just kills this guy.g_unz
