| For you nino! Notes: Penny's rehab going well 09/12/2004 4:33 PM ET By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com LOS ANGELES -- Brad Penny has shifted into overdrive in his rehabilitation from the arm and nerve injury suffered five weeks ago, and the club now is hopeful to see him on the mound in a Major League game before the regular season is over. Management would use that in determining if Penny could help the club as a starter in the postseason. "From the standpoint of time, he's continued to progress to where he's very close to facing live hitters, and it's not out of the realm of possibility this guy could pitch for us before the season's over," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. Penny came out of his Saturday bullpen session without a problem. There's long toss scheduled for Monday, and the hope is that he will be able to pitch batting practice for the first time Tuesday. "Beyond that, probably more of a simulated game, but when [it is], I'm not speculating," said Tracy. "I don't know if instructional league is an option. If not, an option would be to build up [arm strength by coming out of] the bullpen to where he could start." That's the goal, to get Penny's arm strength and endurance to the point where he could start a game late in the season that does not have postseason consequences. In other words, the Dodgers need to clinch the division title before Penny can start a game. In the meantime, if he continues without a setback, he would soon be put in the bullpen in hopes he could be used in a one-sided game. "Maybe there would be games that don't have as much meaning as we once thought they would," Tracy said. "We've got to keep in mind, he hasn't thrown batting practice yet. Any kind of a setback, that's it. You're dealing with the calendar." The minor league season ended last week, so a rehabilitation assignment is not an option. D.
