Default Yankees: Now they know how the Mets feel: Rivalry Central | Red Sox -- Yankees

Yankees: Now they know how the Mets feel: Rivalry Central | Red Sox -- Yankees

By Dom Amore on May 20, 2010 8:30 AM

The Yankees got more bad news on Wednesday night, learning that Jorge Posada has a hairline fracture in his right foot and will be out three to four weeks.

Now the Yankees' injury list reads: Starting catcher out a month.

Starting centerfielder, Curtis Granderson,. out at least two more weeks

Starting DH, Nick Johnson, out at least 2 1/2 months.

Nick Swisher and Marcus Thames, two of their other outfielders, are now hobbling. They were without Mariano Rivera for more than a week, Andy Pettitte missed a start.

"We're going to come to the ballpark every day expecting to win," manager Joe Girardi said.

Most teams would be in bigger trouble. So far the Yankees (25-15) have done a remarkable job of winning games with their 'B' squad manning several positions. A series of injuries to key players completely destroyed the Mets season in 2009. The Mets are somewhat healthier, but not any better in 2010 and the Yankees head to Queens to play them this weekend.

Francisco Cervelli has done a marvelous job behind the plate, and with the bat. But as an every day player he is bound to cool off. If the Yankees call up journeyman Chad Moeller to back him up, that will be an easy out in their lineup.

Unless Swisher or Thames can get back in there tonight, the Yankees will field an outfield of Randy Winn, Brett Gardner and Ramiro Pena. Good chance an outfielder will be called up from the minors, but it will still leave them with holes in the lineup against the Rays, who will be five up in the AL East if they win and sweep this two-game series.

Here's where the Yankees need their remaining big stars to carry the load - Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano are all still playing. Their starting rotation is intact. The bullpen, which has blown four late leads on this homestand, needs to do better.

It's a key stretch of the season now. The Yankees need to stay close until they can get healthy.
