Default Robert DeNiro Playing Legendary Football Coach Vince Lombardi in ESPN Film

I love Bobby to death, but this seems like a weird choice to me. To see him doing the famous scene that Len Berman loves to show where Lombardi bellows, "What the hell's going ON out there?" while Packers around him discreetly scatter, I dunno...

Robert DeNiro Playing Legendary Football Coach Vince Lombardi in ESPN Film
By Blake ⋅ March 11, 2010 ⋅

ESPN films is producing a film based around the life of legendary Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi. Writing the film will be The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’s Eric Roth, and now attached to star in the film is veteran actor Robert DeNiro.

ESPN details the film as spanning from 1959, when Lombardi became a NFL head coach of the worst team in the league, the Green Bay Packers, to the point where he turned the team around to five time NFL champions. The story is also set to highlight the rivalry between Lombardi and Dallas Cowboys’ coach Tom Landry. The two were both assistant coaches on a NY Giants team that lost the 1958 championship. Lombardi was famous for his discipline that was trans formative of the teams he coached. The trophy given away at the Super Bowl is named in his honor.

Sounds like a great film, and it has a great writer attached to it. Pair DeNiro with an A-list screenwriter who worked on films like Forrest Gump, Munich, and The Insider, and you are bound for success. ESPN’s plan is to release this sometime before the 2012 Super Bowl game, to capitalize on the football mania at the time.

can't wait for de niro to explain the workings of the green bay power sweep lol.

john madden wrote in one of his books that he attended a seminar by vince lombardi about the gb psweep, and the whole day was about the technique involved in executing it.

Shit man, i can't think of anyone i'd rather see play him to be honest...DeNiro needs a role like this too, imo....Way too much of the same shit from him the last 10 years.

What's the last good De Niro movie? Does he have a serious blow or gambling problem?

The Good Shepherd was ok 2006
Hes been in a bunch, both good and bad. Kinda like Travolta he will do something very good and then something just cheesy as hell. But then Morgan does the same thing, even Jack,, so I guess if they wave a big paycheck in front of you and pay all your expenses these actors just get it while they can.???

I would.

In his prime, Earnest Borgnine would've looked the part.

LOL, Ernie Borgnine always had that wacko look. He must have been in some of the MST 3k films.

As for DeNiro, echoing above, no secret that he's had a string of duds since his early-career success. Man, he was good as "young Vito" in GF2. Check out the Ciccio scene. Some liked him in "Deer Hunter"...I thought the movie was just too weird. Solid in "Goodfellas" and "Casino."

I've heard first-hand accts that he is very lazy in production. Doesn't know the script, always shouting for "Line!"

I'll be surprised if DeNiro is a good "Lombardi." Lombardi persona = toughness, attention to detail, and working harder than your opponent. I'm really not sure Bobby D has it in him, at this point. Hope he proves me wrong.

Who would I prefer to see in this role? I'll go ahead and say that I prefer a post-50 Jeff Bridges to a post-50 Bobby D. Also, Kurt Russell was PHENOMENAL in "Miracle"...totally got into the Herb Brooks role.
