| 4 Missouri men, 2 businesses facing bookmaking charges By BILL DRAPER, Associated Press Writer Published: Thursday, March 11, 2010 12:25 AM CST KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Three Kansas City-area men pleaded not guilty Wednesday to federal charges of running an illegal sports bookmaking operation that received more than $3.5 million in wagers over a three-year period. Attorneys for Cerlarmo Cammisano, 56, Michael J. Lombardo, 54, both of Kansas City, and James Dicapo, 57, of Parkville, entered not-guilty pleas in U.S. District Court. A fourth defendant, James J. Moretina, 60, of Kansas City, will be assigned a court-appointed lawyer and is expected to enter a plea later this month. Cammisano, who is accused of being the "master agent" in the operation, also is charged with six counts of using the Internet to transmit information to assist in placing bets on sporting events. His brother, William Cammisano Jr., 60, pleaded guilty last month to charges in the same gambling business. Their father was William "Willie the Rat" Cammisano Sr., a notorious Kansas City mobster who died in 1995. Five other men already have pleaded guilty to their roles in the same gambling operation. Moretina is charged with six counts of using a telephone to transmit information to assist in placing bets, while Dicapo and Lombardo are charged with five counts of the same crime. According to the 23-count federal indictment unsealed Wednesday, the four defendants were part of a scheme in which gamblers, mainly from the Kansas City area, were given a toll-free phone number and two Web sites to use in placing bets on sporting events. Participants in the operation paid out or collected cash in person from bettors, usually on a weekly basis, the indictment says. An Arizona company, Phoenix International Teleport Satellite Services Inc., is charged in the indictment with providing telephone numbers and Internet services for the gambling business. A Costa Rica company, Elite Sports, is charged with taking the wagers and keeping records of gambling activity on a server in Costa Rica. The operation is alleged to have run from March 2006 through April 2009. Attorneys for Cammisano, Lombardo and Dicapo declined to comment after the men made an initial appearance Wednesday. Others who have pleaded guilty to involvement in the operation are Cammisano Jr., of Harrisonville; Vincent F. Civella, 53, of Kansas City; Charles J. Simone, 25, of Liberty; Michael V. Badalucco, 26, of Kansas City; Michael C. Sansone, 30, of Kansas City; and Anthony v. Sansone, 27, also of Kansas City. |

James L. Dicapo, 57, admitted that from 2007 to 2009 he sold counterfeit purses, duffle bags, shoes, wallets, sunglasses, designer jeans, t-shirts and baseball caps. The goods bore the names of fashion houses such as Burberry, Coach, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbanna, Dooney & Bourke, Ed Hardy, Gucci, Luis Vuitton and Prada. Prosecutors estimated the value of the goods at more than $400,000. A grand jury charged Dicapo and three others in March with operating an Internet sports bookmaking business that attracted almost $3.6 million in bets between March 2006 and April 2009. Assistant U.S. Jess Michaelsen said that he expects Dicapo to appear in court next week for a change of plea in the gambling case.
