Default CFL: Flu-depleted Esks to face Lions Friday

Flu-depleted Esks to face Lions Friday

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos are proving they are not immune to the flu bug that is ravaging the entire country.

The Canadian Football League team practised for the second straight day without return specialist Tristan Jackson. Receivers Fred Stamps and Andrew Nowacki, running back Calvin McCarty and third-string quarterback Jared Zabransky were also absent from work on Wednesday. Offensive lineman John Comiskey returned after two days off battling the bug.

“We’ve been hit with the flu bug, or whatever it is; there is an illness going through the locker-room,” said Esks head coach Richie Hall. “(Tristan) is still affected by it.

“These guys are still a little bit under the weather. Give them the day off, get them rested, get some medication in them and get ready for Friday.”

The Esks will face the B.C. Lions in Vancouver Friday evening at 8:30 (TSN, 630 CHED) with the third and final West Division playoff spot on the line. The Lions are also affected by the flu, with key players Geroy Simon, JoJuan Armour and Korey Banks all missing some practice time this week.

Stamps said Wednesday that he is expecting to play, despite suffering from a twinge in his leg and fighting the sniffles.

“I’ll be all right,” insisted the CFL leader in reception yardage.

Jackson will travel with the team, but so, too, will possible replacement Skyler Green, who may see his first action since joining the team Oct. 6.

Biggest game of the season for both teams. I like the Lions at home.

Thx, Clev, didn't know this.

That said, general rule of thumb is that hi-level athletes play thru the flu at close to 100% performance. Bones and muscles are different. Something that can be treated w/ an IV has no impact on performance 99.9% of the time.
