| Cliff Lee could land a mega-deal to stay with the Philadelphia Phillies By Scott Toole November 04, 2009, 9:45AM Random thoughts from the world of sports. •The Phillies will surely try to lock up Cliff Lee this winter, and he has a chance to become the game's fourth $100 million pitcher, joining CC Sabathia, Johan Santana and Barry Zito, who got $161 million, $137.5 million and $126 million, respectively. •Hines Ward is the dirtiest player in the NFL, according to a Sports Illustrated poll of 296 players. Most players picked Ward (11.6%), followed by Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (6%), Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter (6%), Cincinnati Bengals safety Roy Williams (5.1%) and Tennessee Titans’ center Kevin Mawae (4.6%). •Why would anyone have picked the Denver Broncos to win in Baltimore? The Broncos were not going to go into M&T Bank Stadium and win. They are overrated and they are 3-point underdogs at home to the Steelers on Monday. •I thought the NFL promised to put another franchise in Cleveland when the Browns left? •I’ve had enough of Tim McCarver. He’s been as bad broadcasting the World Series as the umpires have been calling the games. His statement in the ninth inning of Game 4 that “the Yankees could leave Joba Chamberlain out there to start the bottom of the ninth inning” after Chamberlain had been pinch-hit for in the top of the inning was the last straw. •Have you seen the video of Florida Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes going after the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey? That was an inexcusable cheap shot and the punishment, a half-game suspension, is a joke. •It's one thing to have a physical altercation with another man in the testosterone-fueled world of professional sports. It is a far different, far more disturbing thing to be a man who hits women. Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable should be fired now. •If I were the Kansas City Chiefs and Larry Johnson called out my head coach like he did, he wouldn't play for me again. I realize the bigger offense was his use of a homosexual slur, but the disrespect he showed Todd Haley last week is unacceptable, especially if Haley plans on hanging around Kansas City for the next several years. •Early in the Game 5 telecast of the World Series, play-by-play announcer Joe Buck made this comment about how home plate umpire Dana DeMuth was calling the strike zone. It is “tight side to side,’’ said Buck. "That’s bad news for (New York Yankees starter A.J.) Burnett.’’ To which color analyst Tim McCarver said, “The opposite of last night.’’ •The strike zone is the width of home plate. How can there be any flexibility in that?
