| Cleveland Browns sacked by flu bug; 12 players, including several starters, home with illness TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer 9:18 AM PDT, October 21, 2009 BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have been sacked by the flu. Coach Eric Mangini said 12 players, including Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers and five other starters, are home with flulike symptoms and he plans to adjust his practice on Wednesday as the team prepares to face the Green Bay Packers this weekend. Mangini is taking precautions to make sure his players get more rest and the team is taking extra measures to make sure others don't get sick. He implied that the players had not yet been tested for H1N1 virus. "We're trying at the first signs of any kind of illness to get the guys home and out of the building," Mangini said. "We're working as hard as we can to promote things to prevent the illness and impressing the importance of things like sleep. It's that time of year and unfortunately we have quite a few guys who are dealing with it. We'll adjust practice, we'll work around it and continue to move forward." The Browns' sick players are: Rogers, running back Jerome Harrison, center Alex Mack, cornerback Anthony Madison, safety Brodney Pool, tight end Robert Royal, wide receiver Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Jason Trusnik, defensive end Brian Schaefering, fullback Lawrence Vickers, defensive end Corey Williams and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley. The NFL has provisions for teams that are overwhelmed by swine flu. League spokesman Greg Aiello said all teams received a memo from commissioner Roger Goodell on Oct. 2. It states: "If a club has at least six players unable to participate as the result of confirmed or suspected cases of swine flu, it can receive roster exemptions for those players and promote players from its own practice squad to replace them. A club can receive a max of 8 such exemptions. They must be medically confirmed cases of swine flu. This procedure does not apply to any other type of flu or illness. There is a deadline for promoting practice squad players pursuant to these procedures at four hours prior to kickoff." Wimbley missed last Sunday's game in Pittsburgh and Rogers was sick during the game. The team tried to keep Wimbley isolated from the team and he was driven to the road game while the team took a bus. Wimbley, though, never got well enough to play and was sent home. Rogers was driven back to Ohio in a separate vehicle. Cleveland Browns sacked by flu bug; 12 players, including several starters, home with illness - KTLA

Sounds like Houston has same problem, this is from another article I just read: Mangini said Houston had a similar situation and that the Browns are looking into certain roster provisions a team can make regarding bringing players up from the practice squad and such.

Today's Update: Wimbley and Rogers back with the team Thursday. The other players remain out. Mangini: "There really haven’t been any new cases. In terms of a timetable for the rest of the group coming back, we'll see." Mangini: "We'll continue to be as cautious as we can with this. We're working with the doctors and trainers to stay on top of it & be safe."

Browns get back nine sick players after being tackled by flu bug this week By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (CP) – 1 hour ago BEREA, Ohio — Nine of the 10 Cleveland Browns who missed practice the past two days with the flu are back with the team. Backup defensive end Corey Williams was the only player still at home, and coach Eric Mangini said he didn't anticipate needing the NFL roster exemption put in place for a team besieged by swine flu. Mangini said there have been no new cases since 12 players missed Wednesday. He expects to have a nearly complete roster for Sunday's game against Green Bay. Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, who missed Sunday's loss in Pittsburgh with the flu, returned Thursday. Two of the Browns tested positive for Influenza A, of which H1N1 is a strain. Mangini has not received test results on the other 10 players.

Packers: the final injury report: Packers LB Brandon Chillar (neck) limited, questionable T Chad Clifton (ankle) DNP, doubtful FB Korey Hall (calf) out WR Greg Jennings (hip) limited, probable FB Quinn Johnson (ankle) full, probable WR Jordy Nelson (knee) out NT B.J. Raji (ankle) full, probable QB Aaron Rodgers (foot) full, probable C/G Jason Spitz (back) DNP, doubtful T Mark Tauscher (knee) limited, out DE Jarius Wynn (hamstring) DNP, out * On Clifton: Doubtful, so T.J. Lang will go if Clifton can't. * On Lang: Had a good week. Thought Wednesday was his toughest day. * On Jennings: Not concerned about it unless he has a setback in the last 48 hours. * On Chillar: Did tests this morning. As long as it doesn't flare up again, he should be OK. * On defensive line: Michael Montgomery put together a couple of good weeks. Raji keeps improving with reps but injury has been lingering. * On Spitz: Day to day. Always uncertainty with lower backs. Worked extensively today and will see how feels in morning. * On backups for offensive line: Colledge has flexibility. Lang has played some guard. Dietrich-Smith has played multiple spots. Hope it doesn't come to that.

More Packers: Lang ready for first start, lots of fines If it were up to rookie T.J. Lang, the Packers would win the coin toss on Sunday at Cleveland and take the ball first. Anything to help him get over the pre-game jitters faster. Other than some nerves, Lang said he's ready for his first NFL start at left tackle. Regular starter Chad Clifton isn't expected to play to his lingering ankle injury. "That would be nice," Lang said. "There's always a part of you that first series, you're a little jittery. It would be nice to get that out (of the way) early. It always takes a couple of plays, maybe a series, so it would be nice to get that over." Lang took all the first-team reps at left tackle this week. It's not like he's making his debut at the position. He played there in the fourth quarter at Minnesota on Oct. 5 and then again Sunday against the Lions after Clifton got hurt in the second half. "It's been a good week of preparation," Lang said. "I've taken a ton of reps this week. I feel comfortable technique wise and scheme wise. It's just a matter of getting out there Sunday and keep building on my prior performance and just show when I'm in a starting role that I can get the job done." With Lang starting in place of Clifton and Scott Wells likely to start again at center in place of Jason Spitz (back), the Packers are dangerously thin up front. Recently signed tackle Mark Tauscher isn't ready to play, leaving rookie Evan Dietrich-Smith and second-year pro Breno Giacomini as the only backup linemen available. UPDATE: Four players were fined for plays that took place last Sunday against the Lions. Daryn Colledge was fined $5,000 for unnecessarily striking an opponent late. Donald Driver was fined $5,000 for an illegal blindside block to the head and neck area. Nick Barnett was fined $7,500 for a facemask. Spencer Havner was fined for a horse-collar tackle.
