Exclamation O.T./ Credit protection. I would buy it if you dont have it.

Hey guys.

I just wanted to post about how easy it is to get info nowadays. Not that many of you already don't know but if you have the chance to buy credit protection I would spend the money.

Someone out there has my SS# and address and current phone #.

If I didnt have Lifelock protection plan they could of walked off with a new Lexus yesterday.

But when they called and saw I had it (Lifelock) they returned the cashiers check to the guy and said they had to make a few calls.

Stopped it in time and now feel its the best money I've spent past few years.

Since some fraud was tried there is now a block on my social security # at all three credit agencies and if there is any change they have to call me first.

Found out last night by getting a message on my phone congratulating me on my new purchase of a Lexus. Unfortunately they were closed by the time we listened and I had to spend the night worrying about what was going on.

Nightmare averted and I hope they don't try anything else since this didnt work.

I here ya Stevo. They'd have to be one stupid mo'fo to steal my identity, but I've had a couple problems in the past with illegals using my social to get work. It's happened twice to me! I got a w2 from a former employer, my boss walks up, laughs, and hands it to me. The name was something like Juan Pablo Gonzalez, and it was a mess.

Cost here Pancho is 10$ a month.

Considering he tried to buy a 60K SUV I sure feel it was worth it now.

Interesting Steve, I was all set to get this like a year ago when someone was trying to phish for my information...But then when I googled about Lifelock a couple sites made it seem like the whole thing was a ripoff that did nothing for you....Here's a couple wiki excerpts:
"On May 19th 2009, the service provided by Lifelock was ruled to be illegal by a federal court. The original complaint brought about by Experian, was ruled to be breaching California law by placing fraud alerts on its customer’s credit profiles. The process was said to be costing the credit union millions of dollars a year by “surreptitiously placed hundreds of thousands” of alerts on Experian files “by posing as the consumer,” even when there was no suspicion of identity theft. U. S. District Judge Andrew Guilford granted the motion to stop the product, finding that federal lawmakers, in writing FACTA, did not intend for consumers to be able to contract with a business to place fraud alerts. The ruling also implicates and voids similar services offered by competitors, such as Debix. [8]"

Controversy

Robert J. Maynard, Jr., one of the co-founders of the company resigned after it was revealed that he had once been an identity thief himself. [1] Maynard spent several days in a Maricopa County Jail in 2003 because of an alleged unpaid $16,000 casino marker from the Mirage. Maynard came up with the plan for LifeLock while sitting in his jail cell. While it's true Maynard spent that time in jail, he was not the victim of identity theft. The $16,000 casino marker was his. The Mirage had gotten a copy of his Arizona driver's license when it made him the loan.[6]

In 2007, it was reported that the founder and CEO of LifeLock, Todd Davis, became the victim of fraud when someone used his published social security number to obtain a $500 loan.[12] LifeLock apparently investigated the crime and found the alleged criminal. In an agreement with LifeLock, the alleged identity thief agreed on camera to perform community service to avoid prosecution. However, police then claimed that the alleged identity thief could not be prosecuted because LifeLock coerced the suspect into making a videotaped confession that isn't admissible in court.[13]

In February of 2008, the credit information company Experian sued LifeLock for fraud and false advertising. Experian alleged that LifeLock initiated false credit fraud alerts on Experian customer accounts and misled the public as to the necessity of its services.[14][12]

"A class action lawsuit alleges that as of 2008, there are at least 25 people using Todd Davis' social security number and that the advertising claims are misleading. The Company has responded demonstrating that the 25 alleged identity thieves are public records of failed attempts to use Todd Davis' identity. [15]"

I use private invesrtigators all the time to dig up stuff on plaintiffs. You would be shocked how many people have had their ss number hijacked by an illegal.

A few years ago someone got ahole of my cc #. I am 100% sure it was stolen by someone that worked at an online sportsboob bc I had only used this cc at a sportsbook. Long story short they order $2000 of stuff from banana republic to an adress in houston. I lived in pa!

Had to get the fbi involved

That is interesting DKB.

I just know if I didnt have some sort of protection that made them take the extra step he would of got away with it. After speaking to the dealer he had a false drivers license and cashiers check and knew everything

He almost got away with it.

Hope they got this guy on camera. They are checking that now.

About 2,246 of old Madoff clients are probably wishing they had some sort of 'protection' right about now..

Like these people haven't been screwed over enough already...

Quote:

The names, addresses, Social Security numbers and some Madoff account information on 2,246 investors was contained in a computer stolen from the car of an employee of AlixPartners Llp, the consulting firm that has been processing victims' claims in the Ponzi scheme, a company spokesman, Tim Yost, said Tuesday.

Yost said the laptop was password-protected and not targeted, but was taken in what Dallas police said was a "smash and grab" series of thefts on one particular night at a parking lot.

"We have no reason to believe it [investor data] has been compromised," Yost said.

News of the theft circulated Tuesday among the universe of Madoff victims as federal prosecutors disclosed in a court filing that about half of the investors were net winners because they actually withdrew more money than they gave to Madoff. But prosecutors also noted that nearly half of Madoff's customers sustained net losses in that they contributed more funds to Madoff than they withdrew.

The issue of whether the net winners can each receive up to $500,000 in protection from the Securities Investor Protection Corp., is the subject of a legal battle in bankruptcy court.

SIPC trustee Irving Picard has received more than 15,000 claims and has identified 2,336 account holders who have sustained more than $13 billion in losses, prosecutors said. The loss number is expected to rise.

Prosecutors are trying to sell off Madoff's homes and assets and are considering retaining Picard to oversee government efforts to repay investors. Madoff is serving a 150-year prison sentence in the scam.

Madoff victims already devastated by financial losses were angered that they are just learning about the theft in letters mailed by AlixPartners. "So, this happened two months ago and now they are first telling us," said investor Richard Friedman of Jericho. "What are we, fourth-class citizens?"

AlixPartners said it kept the news of the theft confidential until now at the request of Dallas law enforcement officials. The company is offering to pay investors for two years of credit checking service from a unit of Experian so they can check for potential identity theft. Account information for some investors dating back before 1995 was on the computer, Yost said.
