Angry Computer help

Keep getting an "active update" popup to upgrade to aim version 6.9

Only option is to install it, if you refuse to install it and just click the X in the right hand corner, it reappears every 15 minutes or so. This has been going on for 3 days.

I've gotten these in the past and there are usually 2 options, install or no thanks.

The fact this one only has the option to install leads me to suspect this is a phony disguised as a virus, how do i stop this shit from popping up every 15 minutes?

Good to hear TT!

I don't even have AIM. But I remembered Googling from before and finding all kinds of tricks to turn off annoying aoHELL so-called services. aoHELL pretty much acts as its own spam-bot once you install it.

How'd you make out Punchie?

didn't work, found the file, deleted it, rebooted, still get the pop up.

Now when I look for the file to try and remove it, its not there.

Pancho, I just rebooted & got the same f'ing thing. Try going into task manager and "end process" on the item called aolsoftware. I "think" that fixed it for me.

"Now when I look for the file to try and remove it, its not there"

I hate that, it happened to me several months ago. My IT people at work said bring in the tower but I did one last full scan, found it in a different place or different name and was able to remove/delete it.

Linux-- click red hat icon, system tools, system monitor, process listing.

XP-- cmd ... dir c:\*.exe /w/o/s/p -- no spaces .. lists executable files on c drive in this instance

I'm going looking for another fix. Shit like this always makes me curious.

Has anyone tried... Start <Control Panel <add or remove programs and deleted AOL Coach, and other unnecessary AOL programs? That worked for me once when I was getting update notifications for AOL anti-Spyware, which is another resource hog. Pancho, you have what I posted in post #3, correct?

That aol box is annoying as hell.

Does anyone have the latest msn? I haven't figured out how to turn off all that inter-network stuff.. It seems very intrusive to see all the info every time one of your buddies adds someone to their network. I don't want a friggin myspace- just instant messages.

go to start --> run

type in

msconfig

in msconfig go to the startup tab...
find the entry where it is calling the exe-
uncheck to keep from starting up at bootup
