Default Weaver delivers as Dodgers tie record with 12-0 home record (13 now)

Weaver delivers as Dodgers tie record with 12-0 home record
By Jill Painter, Staff Writer
Updated: 05/05/2009 11:55:46 PM PDT

The Dodgers needed a solid outing from Jeff Weaver in his first start of the season, two spectacular catches from Orlando Hudson, a three-run first inning, another save from the durable Jonathan Broxton and a little help from the late Jackie Robinson to be forever linked with one of baseball's long-standing records.

Weaver didn't even make the team out of spring training and was pitching in Triple-A Albuquerque last week. On Tuesday, Weaver was part of history as the Dodgers tied baseball's record of 12 consecutive wins at home to start the season in a 3-1 win over Arizona at Dodger Stadium.

Of his first-inning diving catch with his back turned toward home plate, Hudson said: "I closed my eyes, and Jackie Robinson carried me the rest of the way."

Of all the records the Dodgers (20-8) have set this year, Joe Torre is glad he wasn't around to talk about Detroit when it won 12 consecutive home games to start the 1911 season.

"I'm glad it's finally something that happened before I was born," Torre joked. "I just don't want this to stop. It's not about the streak, it's about winning ballgames and putting them on the right side of the ledger. A year ago we were fighting to stay around the .500 mark. We want to gain as much confidence as possible."

Weaver was on a pitch count of 75, but he threw 85. He claims to have a "wet noodle" for an arm, so 10 more pitches was no big deal. Torre made a trip to the mound after Weaver got Chad Tracy out on a fly ball to left field for the second out in the fifth, but he left Weaver in the game, and Weaver struck out the next batter, Mark Reynolds.

Weaver, a Simi Valley High product, allowed one run on five hits, struck out six and walked just one. Before the game, Torre said Weaver's pitch count could be less than 75 if he encountered problems.

"You never know how the road is going to turn out," Weaver said.

"I'm fortunate to be here and be part of this. It's something special. Hopefully I can stick around and keep the team rolling to the postseason."

Weaver allowed a base runner in each of his five innings, but he got burned only once, in the third inning.

Augie Ojeda doubled to right to start the game, but then Weaver retired the next three batters. The leadoff batter recorded a hit off Weaver in each of the first three innings.

But Weaver settled into a rhythm after that.

"I'm still getting my feet back on the ground," Weaver said. "It's been a whirlwind this last month or so."

Hudson's feet weren't on the ground for either of his spectacular catches. The one he credits Robinson for helping him on robbed Reynolds of a hit. His diving catch in the fourth inning robbed Eric Byrnes of a hit.

"I didn't think he had a play at either one, especially the first one," Torre said. "The second one, it looked like no one was going to catch up to that ball."

The Dodgers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Rafael Furcal struck out looking, and Orlando Hudson followed with a double to left. Manny Ramirez was intentionally walked, and Andre Ethier singled to right to score Hudson. James Loney had an RBI groundout and Russell Martin reached on a throwing error by shortstop Josh Wilson, which allowed Ethier to score. Matt Kemp grounded out to second to end the inning.

Hudson and Ethier bungled a ball hit to right by Conor Jackson. Both were calling for the ball, and Hudson said he didn't hear Ethier until it was too late.

But it didn't matter. The Dodgers' streak continued.

Default Torre Provides Perspective on Dodgers’ Hot Start

Torre Provides Perspective on Dodgers’ Hot Start
By LYNN ZINSER

When the Los Angeles Dodgers set the National League record for home victories to start the season Monday night, they passed a team their manager, Joe Torre, was awfully familiar with: the 1983 Atlanta Braves, whose manager was Torre.

The Dodgers’ 11-0 start at Dodger Stadium pushed them past those Braves, who began 10-0 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. But Torre told reporters that the comparisons ended there. He said the 2009 Dodgers were a much better team.

Torre should certainly hope so: the 1983 Braves finished second to the Dodgers in the N.L. West and did not make the playoffs. But he has little proof: the 2009 Dodgers have not yet played a team with a winning record. Their 19-8 record, the best in the majors, had come largely at the expense of their division rivals: San Francisco, Colorado, San Diego and Arizona.

The Dodgers played Arizona (11-15) again Tuesday in an attempt to tie the major league record of a 12-0 home start, set by the 1911 Detroit Tigers.

If anything you have to think Torre is glad to be where he is vs NY

Good weather and a good team this year.

Go Dodgers.

Dodgers set ML record with 13-0 start at home

Associated Press - May 7, 2009 1:33 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers broke the modern major league record for home winning streak to start a season with their 13th straight victory, 10-3 over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.

Rafael Furcal scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Andre Ethier, and the Dodgers broke it open with seven in the sixth, including a two-run double by Manny Ramirez and a two-run single by James Loney to surpass the 12-0 record of the 1911 Detroit Tigers.

The Dodgers' seventh straight victory made them a major league-best 21-8 overall, matching their best start since the 1977 club started out 23-6 and won an NL pennant in Tommy Lasorda's first season as manager. The 1983 Dodgers also were 21-8.
