Mets' new bullpen already healing scars caused by '08 relievers

It's OK, Mets fans.

I bet more than a few of you need to re-educate yourselves on the definition of a "hold" and a "save" today. It's been some time since we've seen those statistical accomplishments with any regularity around these parts.

Relievers Sean Green, J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez spun 3 1/3 scoreless innings in a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday.

Here's some context:

* The Met bullpen didn't even sniff 3 1/3 shutout innings in a game over the last two weeks of 2008. In 11 contests beginning on Sept. 17, relievers combined to put up zeroes in just two of them. One encompassed an inning of work (9/23), the other two innings (9/20).

* In the entire month of September, members of the Metropolitan relief corps posted 3 1/3 or more scoreless innings in a game just twice.

Ya gotta believe

Thumbs up
Daniel Murphy. What a plate appearance against Aaron Harang in the fifth. The kid battled back from an 0-2 hole and socked a home run on the 9th pitch of the AB.

Thumbs down
Razor Shines/David Wright. Considering Wright didn't get his engines going until after he rounded third, why did the coach give him the green light after a Carlos Beltran single in the fifth? David was easily cut down at the plate on what was a mediocre throw.
