WINNIPEG - The seeds for Tim McLean’s brutal murder on board a Greyhound bus last week may have been planted when the man accused of his murder, Vince Li, spent nearly an hour chatting up the victim’s co-worker during their ride through western Manitoba, the Winnipeg Free Press has learned.

Li, 40, took a seat at the front of the bus beside a woman named Stacy after getting on board in Brandon. The pair chatted and were even seen smoking together during a rest stop.

As the bus resumed its ill-fated journey towards Winnipeg, Li suddenly moved to the back of the bus and sat beside McLean, who was listening to his headphones and apparently asleep.

Moments later, McLean was being repeatedly stabbed until he was decapitated. Horrified passengers fled the bus but managed to lock the killer inside the bus.

McLean’s family and friends don’t believe Li’s change-of-seating was a coincidence. And they question why he was charged with second-degree murder and not first-degree murder, which indicates planning and premeditation.

“I have this unbelievably strong feeling that him sitting beside Stacy had something to do with this,” McLean’s former girlfriend, Alexandra Storey, told the Free Press in an exclusive interview Monday.

Tim and Stacy had become friends while working together at various western Canadian fairs through North American Midway Entertainment.

They were travelling together to Winnipeg - although seated separately in different areas of the bus - and had planned to meet up with a mutual friend in the city before all heading to British Columbia.

McLean’s loved ones now desperately want to speak with Stacy - her last name is not known to them - to find out more about her dealings with Li on the bus.

They only know that she quickly returned to B.C. after McLean’s killing, and presumably after an interview with police.

A call to North American Midway Entertainment seeking information about the woman wasn’t returned on Monday.

In recent weeks, Edmonton ethno-historian Nathan Carlson has been called everything from a raving lunatic to an egomaniac trying to raise his own profile by exploiting a horrifying tragedy.

"It's been terrible," he said yesterday. "I can't believe the things people have been calling me."

Carlson is one of the world's leading experts on what he calls Windigo phenomenon, a condition where people believe they have been possessed by a Windigo, a mythological native monster with an appetite for human flesh.

Carlson was horrified last month over the beheading and alleged cannibalism on a bus bound from Edmonton to Winnipeg and its parallels to the Windigo phenomenon.

Less than two weeks prior to the incident, the accused killer - Edmonton newspaper carrier Vince Weiguang Li - had delivered issues of the Edmonton Sun featuring an extensive interview with Carlson, detailing his studies of grisly accounts of beheadings and cannibalism by Albertans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

But when Carlson said in a nationally-circulated interview that he was horrified that Li might well have read the feature just days before the bus attack, Carlson became the object of ridicule on some Internet discussion boards.

"Windigo? Really? This is a joke, right? Does Carlson honestly believe this? *sigh*" sneered one poster.

"The Windigo business ... has no place in the news," wrote another.

"The devil made me do it has never been a strong defence for violent crime. I don't blame you for being ashamed of your bretheren believing in Windigo.

"As Canada slides down the slippery slope of immorality, get used to hearing about more evil spirits released into your earthly plane, above the 49th parallel," wrote another on U.S. discussion board.

"People thought I was saying the bus killing was caused by Windigo possession," Carlson said.

"But what I really said was there might be a connection between the article and the incident."

He was afraid that the article might have put ideas in the head of someone already seriously mentally ill, not that anything supernatural had occurred.

A Swiss gastronomist has stirred a controversy in the tranquil Alpine republic after announcing that he will serve meals cooked with human breast milk.

Mr Locher attracted the attention of the leading media of the German-speaking world this week after he posted ads looking for women donors, who will receive just over three pounds for 14 ounces of their milk.

He said: "I first experimented with breast milk when my daughter was born.

"One can cook really delicious things with it. However, it always needs to be mixed with a bit of whipped cream, in order to keep the consistency."

The food control authority in Switzerland was initially confused by the apparent loophole in local legislation regulating the use of human milk and it was not clear whether Mr Locher could actually be banned from serving his specialities.

"Humans as producers of milk are simply not envisaged in the legislation.

"They are not on the list of approved species such as cows and sheep, but they are also not on the list of the banned species such as apes and primates," Rolf Etter of the Zurich food control laboratory said.
