| Pick-six carry-over of nearly $1.2 million awaits bettors at Hollywood Park No one has hit the pick six for three consecutive days. Starry Pursuit wins the Flawlessly. By Bob Mieszerski, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer July 5, 2008 Besides a slew of graded stakes races, Saturday at Hollywood Park will also feature a massive pick six carry-over. No one was able to isolate all six winners in the sequence on Friday, so there is a three-day carry-over of nearly $1.197 million. Not a single winner in the final half dozen races was less than 6-1 on Friday, including Starry Pursuit, who proved she could handle two turns with a wire-to-wire victory in the $114,100 Flawlessly. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer for owners Peter Abruzzo and John Carver, Starry Pursuit, a 3-year-old Van Nistelrooy filly, was hustled to the front by jockey Joel Rosario, relaxed well once clear and went on to win by one length over 9-1 shot Ginger Pop, who was her closest pursuer throughout the ungraded stakes. The win was the fourth in five tries on the grass for Starry Pursuit and her third in as many attempts in Inglewood. "She comes over real calm and professional, nothing seems to bother her," said Hollendorfer. "She's very composed and I think that helps her." The win enabled Rosario to sweep half of the pick-six races. He also won the fourth with 11-1 shot Chadlington and the fifth with 8-1 outsider Street Match. ------ Lucky Island, the 3-2 second choice, led throughout to win for the fourth time in five starts in the U.S., taking the $161,000 Tom Fool Handicap at Belmont Park. Alan Garcia rode the 4-year-old Lucky Roberto colt for Shadwell Stable and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin in the Grade II. Tasteyville, the 6-5 favorite, was second. Lucky Island has won five of six in his career. His maiden victory came by nine lengths in his native Argentina on June 16, 2007. One race earlier, Any Limit, a 5-1 shot, won for the fourth time in eight tries at Belmont, capturing the $150,000 Top Flight Handicap by a neck over Wild Gams. ------ Silverfoot, an 8-year-old With Approval gelding, ended a lengthy losing streak with a victory in the $175,000 Stars And Stripes Turf Handicap at Arlington Park. Rene Douglas rode the 5-1 shot for Chrysalis Stables LLC and trainer Dallas Stewart to his first victory since he won the Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs on May 29, 2006. Meanwhile, in Kentucky, Thorn Song, the second choice, went wire-to-wire under jockey Kent Desormeaux over a soggy turf in the $200,000 Firecracker Handicap at Churchill Downs. |
