Indianapolis, March 12, 2004 - One time pro football star Art Schlichter was used to media attention at Ohio State and then with the Colts. Friday, on his way back to his jail cell, he remarked to cameras that followed him, "Must be a slow news day."
He appeared in court on crimes related to his diagnosed gambling habit - something Schlichter and his attorney says left him desperately needing counseling.
When asked if he thought he would get the counseling, Schlichter replied, "I hope so, down the road. I hope so."
Jack Crawford, his attorney, said, "We are trying to develop an agreement in this case that will allow him to get help for his compulsive gambling addiction."
Prosecutors charge him with 11 counts, including forgery, theft and corrupt business influence. They say he swindled money from people - promising a hefty profit from pro and collegiate game tickets.
Schlichter will head back to court in April for possible trial.
So far, his defense has turned down several plea agreements with prosecutors, "We have rejected pleading to all those counts," according to Crawford. "He is charged with multiple counts but he is not guilty of all those counts." |
