Harkleroad to appear in Playboy

A lot of people are going to be seeing a lot more of Ashley Harkleroad this year.

The 61st-ranked American lost to Serena Williams 6-2, 6-1 Sunday in the first round of the French Open. After the match, she said she has posed for the August edition of Playboy magazine.

"I thought about it, and it was something that I did," Harkleroad said. "I'm proud of my body. I was representing a female athlete's body."

Harkleroad said she did the shoot while she was recovering from having one of her ovaries removed less than two months ago.

"I was just laying there for three weeks, and an offer came to me," Harkleroad said. "I thought, 'Well, I'm not really doing anything right now."'

The 23-year-old Harkleroad noted other athletes that have appeared in the magazine, including Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard and former volleyball player Gabrielle Reese.

"I'll be the first tennis player ever. That's kind of cool," Harkleroad said.

"There's a few reasons why I did it, but I can't really go into it right now," she added. "But like I said, I really didn't think it was that big of a deal. I'm proud of my body. I stay in shape and try to stay fit."

Harkleroad said she did the shoot at several locations in Los Angeles after her surgery.

"There were pros and cons that I had to deal with, and I took a few days to figure out exactly what I wanted to do and how I wanted to go about it," Harkleroad said before answering a question about whether she was wearing any clothes during the shoot.

"I was," she said before pausing, then adding with a laugh, "sometimes. You know, it's Playboy."

Ashley Harkleroad shows her naked ambition

It was not the kind of weather in which Ashley Harkleroad, the American, would have wanted to undertake a reprise of her photo shoot for Playboy, the first time a tennis player has agreed to pose naked for the magazine.

Harkleroad, defeated by Serena Williams in the first round of the French Open on Sunday, has been front-page news before, but that was for her wedding to Alex Bogomolov Jr, her fellow pro, at the age of 19, in a marriage that lasted less than two years. Her proclamation yesterday - that she had been recovering from an operation to remove a cyst from her right ovary, when a call came through with a very revealing offer - momentarily took one's mind off forehands and backhands.

“I thought, ‘well I'm not really doing anything,' so I considered it and it was something that I wanted to do,” the 23-year-old from Georgia, ranked No 61 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, said. “I am proud of my body. I was representing a female athlete's body.” We will have to wait for the August issue to see the final results.

A little off-topic: hard to believe now, but when I was a kid there were middle-aged celebrities. Not people who had been popular when they were young and then just got old, but actual middle-aged people who for some reason were widely admired for their mature qualities, like being suave or witty or talented. For example, there were women who were famous pop singers even though they were fat and unattractive. What a crazy world that was, back before the scientific link between being a hot babe and being a good singer was discovered.

Yep, it's almost impossible now to really 'make it' in the world of entertainment, unless you fit a certain physical mold....Especailly in music...I think a lot of that stems from MTV...
