Dallas Cowboys deal with HBO 'imminent'

The Dallas Cowboys are not only going back to California for training camp, they are expected to once again invite HBO to broadcast their every move.

A deal is "imminent" that will allow NFL Films to film five to six weeks of training camp in Oxnard, Calif. and air it on the HBO show Hard Knocks, according to a source.

Training camp opens in late July. Last season, the Cowboys held training camp in San Antonio.

The last time the Cowboys were on Hard Knocks was 2002, when they finished 5-11. It was Dave Campo's last season as coach.

HBO has aired Hard Knocks three times.

In 2001, the then-Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens were the first team to allow NFL Films to film every meeting and practice as well as show how players spent time away from the field. The Kansas City Chiefs appeared last season.

Cowboys officials couldn't be reached for comment.

But Ross Greenburg, president of HBO sports, said there is "nothing to report" regarding a deal with the Cowboys.

Pacman move defended: Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones defended the team's acquisition of suspended cornerback Pacman Jones on Monday at a news conference for the Super Bowl XLV Host Committee.

"One of the things that we want young people to know is that you can make mistakes," Jones said. "You do make mistakes ... it's not the end of the world. Take advantage of your opportunities and clean that slate."

It's interesting that HBO is continuing to produce "Hard Knocks," since it decided to cancel "Inside the NFL" after a three-decade run. "Hard Knocks" is produced by NFL Films, which will have a 24-person crew living at the Oxnard training camp.

It'll shoot more than 700 hours of video over the course of the series.

Camera and sound crews will have unlimited access to the players' and coaches' meeting rooms, training rooms, dorms and practice fields. Four players a day will wear wireless microphones during practice with as many as 12 wearing them during preseason games.

The Cowboys will have exhibitions at San Diego and Denver during the training camp period. "It's the most challenging, high-profile project of the year for NFL Films," NFL Films president Steve Sabol said in a statement. "There is no shooting script, no structure, no format. The storylines change weekly. For NFL Films, it is a six-week-long audible. We're privileged to be able to work with HBO and the Cowboys, the most glamorous franchise in pro sports."
