Default Tonight I made the stupidest move I have ever made in a poker tourney

3 hours into a large tournament.....playing very conservative......but am in the top 20

Table chip leader is raising from the button EVERY SINGLE TIME into my BB

so he raises again and I am sitting on AK so I reraise (but only about 1/6 of my stack)

without hesitation he goes all in (which I he has done countless times in the tourney)

I call and he flips over bullets

There are not many times in life where you should be calling 5/6's of your stack with AK

Worst part is, after grabbing a beer to console me, he has managed to give away about half of my stack in the next 5 minutes

I've been playing a lot of tourneys an doing very, very well. The one thing you've got to remember is the goal is to win the tourney, not the hand that you are on. Let hikm steal every time, the one time you've got the nuts yoou'll get it all back plus.

ak in a bsb battle is plenty good to get aipf. especially if he is as aggro as you say. tough luck, but you played it correctly.

I don't think it's a stupid move at all.

Wasn't a bad move. AK is only a dog to AA or KK and with the way you say he played there's no reason to suspect he had bullets or cowboys.

I was actually in a smaller tournament at a local casino a couple of weeks ago - first real tournament I played in (i.e. not a mini tournament). When you play in one of those you realize what bullshit most online tournaments are.

Right move made, he just as easily could've had 9 3 os.... I make that call everytime without hesitation in the situation you described. It was just bad luck and nothing more.

I am with Superfly on this one

If this is late in the tourney or I am a short stack, then it is a no brainer call

Fact is that I had a healthy chip stack and AK is not dominant over anything that he could potentially call with for half his stack

ayep. maybe 1 in 10 hands are worth playing. personally i hate AK & AA. both of them, unless against each other, can be blown outta the water by a middle pair with a helpful flop.

regardless, the consensus is right that you played the call correctly Buck.

these new types of players that are constantly agressive are really hard to read too, unless you're mentally tracking every hand they play, and i'm unable to do that anymore so i don't play ...

"so he raises again and I am sitting on AK so I reraise (but only about 1/6 of my stack)"

I'm not sure what the pot is after all this because you didn't specify the blinds/antes, or whether "1/6" of your stack includes them and/or his initial raise, but ....figuring that you're getting about 8/5, you need about 38% equity against his range.

You didn't mention if your AK was suited, so I'll assume not.

If my assumptions are correct, you'd have to put him on a top 3% range to make a fold correct here. That means, did you read him for a range looser than AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs, AK? If so, your call was correct. But did you take the time to read him THAT HAND, or did you just auto-pilot insta-call on the situation (aggro CL in position)?

If the latter, then you (and I when making the same mistake) should kick yourself for not making a better read. But if you DID take the time to read him, and read him wrong (or, as some would put it, "right" considering that AA was part of the range you assigned him), then peace, bro. Poker sucks except when it doesn't.
