Default Stabbing death at Taj Mahal started with argument at poker table

By STEVEN LEMONGELLO
Published: Sunday, April 06, 2008

An argument at a poker table Saturday at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort escalated into a stabbing in the parking garage, leaving one man dead and another in custody, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
The incident took place at 2:46 p.m. Saturday, spokeswoman Madelaine Vitale said.

Vicente Perez, 57, of Georgia, began arguing with another man at a Taj poker table, Vitale said. They stepped out of the casino and into the valet parking area of the garage near the Virginia Avenue entrance, where the argument descended into violence.

The victim, whose identity was not released pending the notification of his family, was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m. at AtlantiCare Medical Center in Atlantic City, Vitale said.

Perez was taken into the custody of the Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit, Vitale said, and was expected to be charged with aggravated manslaughter and two weapons charges, as the knife was recovered at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for today, Vitale said.

From Press staff reports
Published: Monday, April 07, 2008

ATLANTIC CITY - The Georgia man charged in Saturday's fatal stabbing in a casino parking garage is being held at the Atlantic County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail, according to the jail's records office.
Vicente Perez, 57, is charged with aggravated manslaughter, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.

Officials have declined to name the victim, who was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m. Saturday, about an hour after the stabbing.

knives don't kill people, people kill people

1000's of people are cheated everyday with online poker, not one death.

statistically it is safer to play poker online than it is to drive a car.

2+2 thread is interesting. One guy thinks he has secured his seat and goes to get some cash to start playing, another guy comes along and the dealer who apparently hasn't heard the man say he'd be right back gives the seat to another guy. Wow. And to add a twist, it's not just bad-guy gamblers wielding knives, but black guy vs white.

The knives had nothing to do with it...

They would have done this with their fists I guess

2 p.m. Update - MAYS LANDING – An Ocean County man who was stabbed outside an Atlantic City casino died from a wound to the left cheek that severed a carotid artery and caused him to bleed to death, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said Monday.
The victim, Arthur Prince, 61, of Toms River, was at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort Saturday afternoon when he and Vicente Perez, 57, of Macon, Georgia, had an altercation at 2:46 p.m. inside the casino at a poker table that spilled out into the valet parking area off Virginia Avenue.

Ga. man accused in fatal casino stabbing makes first court appearance

By REGINA SCHAFFER, Staff Writer
Published: Tuesday, April 08, 2008

1 p.m. Update - MAYS LANDING – A Georgia man charged with stabbing to death a Toms River man after an argument at a casino poker table answered questions regarding his rights during his first appearance Tuesday morning.

Superior Court Judge Albert Garofolo advised Vicente Perez, 57, of his rights and asked the Macon, Georgia man if he understood what he was charged with. Perez was charged Saturday night with aggravated manslaughter, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose following the stabbing death of Arthur Prince, 61.

Perez began arguing with Prince at a poker table inside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, authorities said. They stepped out of the casino and into the valet parking area of the garage near the Virginia Avenue entrance, where the argument descended into violence. Atlantic County Medical Examiner Hydow Park determined that Prince died from a wound to the left cheek that severed a carotid artery and caused him to bleed to death. The knife was recovered at the scene, authorities said.

The judge kept Perez’s bail at $500,000 full cash, but Perez’s attorney, James Leonard Jr., told Garofolo that he would be filing a formal bail application the same day. Perez remains in the Atlantic County jail pending further proceedings.

A number of Perez’s family members — who traveled from Georgia — filled the courtroom in a show of support, including his wife, two adult daughters and a brother. Neither Leonard nor Perez’s family had any comment after the brief hearing.

I wanna know how the guy who took Perez's can from him an beat him with it is considered the "victim"? Perez was smokin a cigarette and the "black" guy comes up takes his cane an beats on him with it? feckin self-defense as i see it. in fear of his life ...

"Within a few minutes, white man leaves his seat and goes outside near the valet area -- maybe to smoke a cigarette. This makes black man even more furious because he lost his seat and now white man is not even playing. Black man goes outside to confront white man.

Details are sketchy but a fight ensues right in the middle of the Taj valet area (a very public area). White man walks with a limp and uses his cane. There is some pushing and at some point black man pulls white man's cane away from him and hits white man with it. White man pulls a large knife out of his jacket and stabs (or slashes) at black man's neck severing his carotid artery."
