Sources: Dallas Cowboys consider Pacman Jones

Team has had internal talks about suspended cornerback

02:10 AM CST on Saturday, March 8, 2008
By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

The wow factor that Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was talking about adding to his team could be Adam "Pacman" Jones.

According to multiple sources, the Cowboys have had internal discussions about obtaining the suspended Tennessee cornerback if he's reinstated by the NFL.

Jones has been suspended since April 2007 for violations of the NFL conduct policy.

Jones is considered one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL, and that alone has made the Cowboys think about bringing him to Dallas, according to the sources.

There would be numerous obstacles, starting with the suspension.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said commissioner Roger Goodell will review Jones' case before training camps start in July.

And should Jones be reinstated, the Cowboys would have to work out a trade with the Titans.

But the Titans could also release Jones, putting him on the open market.

Jones' Atlanta-based attorney, Manny Arora, did not return a phone call seeking comment, but he told The (Nashville) Tennessean he planned to ask Goodell to re-examine Jones' suspension before the April 26-27 NFL draft.

On Thursday, Jones again said he wants to play for the Cowboys, on an Atlanta radio station.

"I just have to do what I have to do to get back on the field," he said. "Hopefully it won't be long, and hopefully it will be a couple of more months. I would love to play for the Cowboys, America's Team."

If the Cowboys acquire Jones, he would join Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman and Anthony Henry, who led the team with six interceptions in 2007. Jones would also be a leading candidate to return punts.

In 2006, he averaged 12.9 yards per return with three touchdowns.

The Cowboys have signed players with troubled pasts before. The team signed nose tackle Tank Johnson last season after he served a suspension for violations of the NFL conduct policy. Johnson maintained a good relationship with Goodell during his suspension, and the Cowboys touted their off-field player programs headed by director Bryan Wansley and consultants Calvin Hill and Jacqualene Stephens.

Since he was drafted by Tennessee in the first round of the 2005 draft, Jones has been arrested six times.

Last month, he entered a guilty plea on charges of felony obstruction of officers stemming from an incident in Georgia.

Jones said he's made some bad decisions.

"It is not always that trouble seems to find me," he told the radio station. "I am learning how to adjust to it, and I am bettering myself as a person."

Leno once introduced a clip ''some footage of the Dallas Cowboys next draft pick'' and cued up a police helicopter chase of a b&e suspect hopping backyard fences. This would be in the same vein lol.

ugh... hard to imagine why a team as promising as Dallas would even consider adding a poison like pacman to the mix.

Default Do not put 'Pacman' in Cowboys' corner

Do not put 'Pacman' in Cowboys' corner

By JENNIFER FLOYD ENGEL
Star-Telegram staff writer

Adam "Pacman" Jones does not do ambivalence.
Disgust or intrigue usually follows whenever his name is mentioned; whether your team desperately needs a cornerback likely determines which one.

Did I mention the Cowboys desperately need a cornerback? And that Pacman's name is on a lot of lips at Valley Ranch? They do. And it is.

The needy part became painfully obvious at about halftime of the Giants game. Watching Eli Manning and Co. march down the field using the very popular "Throw It to Whoever Jacques Reeves Is Covering" play had a way of turning corner into necessity. It became even bigger once Reeves and Nate Jones exited via free agency.

Even bad cornerbacks are better than no cornerbacks.

Which brings us to Pacman, who is bad in the whole "can be trusted with wide receivers, not with strippers, in Vegas, with bags of cash, or really in any situation" kind of way.

Pacman actually jumpstarted speculation with his "I'd love to play for the Cowboys, America's Team" declaration during a radio interview a week or so ago. Of course, he'd love to play for anybody who would pay him in real American dollars.

Lest anybody worry, Pacman promised to keep any future bags of money away from strip clubs, which is what landed him in trouble with Commissioner Rog.

"I've got a [stripper] pole in my house now," he noted.

Who says people can not change?

There have been no "hell, no's" leaking from Valley Ranch, rather quiet admissions his name has been discussed. Is still being discussed. As one Cowboys type noted, Pacman's name will go away for a while, then spring back up later in a different conversation, by a different person.

The word is intrigued, not necessarily interested.

Do not touch him -- and not because he introduced "making it rain" to the middle-class, suburban-guy lexicon or because he's a world-class screw-up. He did, and he is.

The reason for the Cowboys to just say no is because you only take risks this big on really good to great players. And is anybody convinced Pacman will be able to return to that level after not playing for a significant period of time?

Tank Johnson certainly was not able to do so.

Now, obviously, Pacman has a stronger talent base to pull from than Tank. He also missed a lot more time and used his time off less wisely with his forays into pro wrestling.

And therein lies why Pacman is still a risk, despite bringing the pole and party to his house and his promise of being a changed man. He does not seem to understand the mess he's in, or how serious it is, no matter where he lands.

The problem is not necessarily with what he has done. Pacman would have to be the dumbest person in the universe to play rainmaker again, and he might indeed hold that title. What is risky about him is what he might do the next time. My feeling is the sky is the limit with this guy, especially once he's liquid again.

But the Cowboys desperately need a cornerback.

And this is why Pacman is currently more intriguing than disgusting for now.

the writer of this article very dumb.

she says they desperately need a cornerback when they have an all pro corner, and another corner who was leading the league in ints when he wen t down hurt.

what they DESPERATELY need is a safety or 3.

Source: Dallas Cowboys discuss deal for Pacman Jones

09:07 AM CDT on Friday, March 21, 2008
By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – The Dallas Cowboys have held preliminary discussions with the Tennessee Titans about trading for suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, according to a source.

The Cowboys could give up a late-round draft pick to acquire Jones.

According to a source, Titans officials are not in a hurry to make a deal but realize the best way to move on without Jones is to trade him.

Jones told his Atlanta-based agent, Manny Arora, if traded he would put the Cowboys near the top of the list of teams he would play for.

Arora, however, said he's talked to numerous teams about Jones and would like a trade to occur before the NFL draft on April 26-27.

"If Tennessee chooses not to have him on their roster next year, it's in their best interest to trade him," Arora said, "because if not, they would get no compensation."

An NFL spokesman said Jones, suspended since April 2007 for violations of the NFL conduct policy, can still be traded to another team.

The Cowboys are $3.9 million under the salary cap, and Jones is scheduled to earn a base salary of $1.292 million whenever he returns to the field.

Jones, 24, is scheduled to become a free agent following the 2009 season. A source said Jones is willing to renegotiate his contract at a lower salary to accommodate a team willing to sign him.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he will review Jones' suspension before training camps open in July.

But Arora would like to speed up the process because he doesn't want a team with needs at cornerback to draft one without taking a serious look at Jones.

The Cowboys need depth at cornerback after losing both backup corners in free agency.

"The way I feel, if they bring in Tank [Johnson] or [cornerback] DeAngelo Hall or whoever, they understand what's at stake," Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware said.

"They understand how many guys are really working. Like Tank was saying when he came here, 'I've never seen as many guys working out at the same time and have the same drive in off-season workouts.' "

Last month at the NFL scouting combine, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he wanted to add a "wow" factor to the team. On Monday, Jones told ESPN it was doubtful he could add an impact player now, yet he was confident it might happen in the future.

Arora said he wants to bring Pacman Jones to a team that has strong leadership at the coaching and management positions, plus a solid off-the-field program.

The Cowboys tout their off-the-field player development programs, where former NFL player Calvin Hill is a consultant, as one of the best in the NFL.

Staff writer Todd Archer contributed to this report.

Supposedly, they are thinking of going after Trent Dilfer too.

Actually, i could appreciate them wanting Dilfer a Hell of a lot more than Asshat Jones.

Quote:
Raiders want Dilfer?

Free agent Trent Dilfer told the congregation at Northside Christian Church in Fresno Sunday that the Raiders have shown interest in him.

Dilfer played his college ball at Fresno State and heard some cheers from the audience. The Raiders haven't been very active trying to find a backup for JaMarcus Russell.

Dilfer has proven a good tutor of young quarterbacks.

Quote:
"I really think my days being a Titan are with," Jones said Saturday, according to The Tennessean. "I enjoyed my stay here. I just think my days as a Titan are over with."

Jones, appearing at a charity basketball game at Tennessee State University with rosters made up of current and former Titans, signed his name and the number 21 on a football that was being auctioned off for charity instead of the number 32 he wore in two seasons in Nashville.

Asked if that was wishful thinking, he said "that's your idea," according to the report. But Jones also said he believed Deion Sanders, whom he considers a friend, would let him wear the No. 21 that "Prime Time" wore with the Cowboys, according to the report.

Jones, who is still serving an indefinite suspension from the NFL after several run-ins with the law, is reportedly the subject of trade talks between the Titans and Cowboys. Last week, SI.com reported the Cowboys had offered the Titans an additional player after a proposed trade of a seventh-round draft pick for Jones was turned down. "The kid was the sixth pick in the [2005] draft and we need to get something of value in return," an unnamed Titans official told the Web site.

Asked Saturday what his value should be in the trade market, Jones said "I would say a first-round pick if I had to say something, but that ain't up to me," The Tennessean reported.

Former Titans quarterback Steve McNair, who was one of the coaches at the charity basketball game, said he's hopeful for Jones' future, according to the report.

"He understands his goal now in life is to get back on the football field," McNair said, according to the report. "He's got great talent, his personality is changing to the best and that's what you have to do.

"Sometimes you have to go through some trials and tribulations, some bad things to get the taste of being left behind. And I think he's felt that. I think he's willing to come back and work hard and get back on the football field."

Jones has stated his willingness to renegotiate the contract and his agent, Manny Arora, met with Cowboys officials last week.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher has said the team has given Jones permission to look for a new team.

"We've given them permission to look for a new home and whatever happens after that happens," Fisher told The Tennessean last week. "He's entitled to his opinion. I know he has enjoyed the time that he has spent here on the football field. But because of his choices and such off the field, he's created a situation where he's going to have to look elsewhere."

Default Dallas Cowboys don't need to rush Pacman deal

Dallas Cowboys don't need to rush Pacman deal

01:36 AM CDT on Wednesday, April 9, 2008

If you're worrying about why it's taking the Cowboys so long to acquire Pacman Jones, then stop it.

Dallas is taking absolutely the right approach with Tennessee.

The Cowboys have affixed a value to Jones, a fourth- or fifth-round pick, and they're not budging off it. Nor should they.

Tennessee claims they need two picks for Jones because he's a stud cornerback and returner. He is. No one would argue with that.

Dallas has affixed a value - a fourth- or fifth-round pick - to cornerback Pacman Jones (left). But the Titans have no leverage.

Though coach Jeff Fisher talks about what a great teammate he was and the organization talks about how imperative it is they get value for him, we all know they don't want him back on the team.

The Titans have given him permission to seek a trade, and no one other than Dallas seems interested.

So what we have here is a case of posturing.

Pacman is eventually coming to Dallas unless some other team shocks the world and decides it can't live without the troubled cornerback. And if that happens, so be it.

Dallas has made its offer, and Jerry Jones should let it ride. There's no need to bid against himself.

And if the Cowboys don't get him, that's OK. They don't need him to win the Super Bowl.

I hope he goes to Dallas for 2 reasons.

1) My Titans will be able to receive some sort of draft pick
2) I could see his life totally falling apart if he never plays in the NFL again. Hopefully he would end up in jail but I don't see this guy living to 30 withouth NFL. (I really just want the picks)

Talks are back on, and the Dallas Cowboys have increased their offer to the Titans for suspended cornerback Pacman Jones, according to a source.

Cornerback Pacman Jones hasn't played in the NFL since the 2006 season.
View largerMore photos Photo store The Cowboys, who have been preparing for the draft, had been sticking to their offer of one mid-round pick since negotiations with Tennessee began more than a month ago. The Titans have been asking for two picks for Jones, one this year and one in 2009.

Jones' agent, Manny Arora, said last week his client would apply for reinstatement today. Commissioner Roger Goodell, who will be in Dallas on Wednesday to speak at the SMU Athletic Forum, has said he would make a decision on Jones before training camp.

A trade could be completed without Goodell reinstating Jones. The Cowboys signed defensive tackle Tank Johnson last season in the middle of an eight-game suspension, however, the league allowed him to work out at the team's facility before his punishment was over. Jones could be granted the same exemption should he be dealt to a new team.

Jones and Arora said they are willing to re-work Jones' contract if he's traded. The Titans are looking to recoup some of the signing bonus money Jones has earned, and Jones is seeking some incentive money he earned before his suspension. Neither side has filed a grievance.
