Miami RedHawks men's basketball coach Charlie Coles will miss tonight's 7 p.m. Miami-Kent State game to be televised on ESPN2. He underwent medical tests in Oxford on Monday. In his absence, associate head coach Jermaine Henderson will run the team.
Coles, 66, was under the weather and did not coach Saturday's victory over rival Ohio University. The 17-year MAC head coach, first at Central Michigan and now with the RedHawks, has had two heart attacks in his coaching career -- one in 1985 while coaching at CMU and the other in 1998 coaching at Miami.
The 1998 episode came during the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament, at Western Michigan. He did not finish the season, although the team made a run to the tournament finals before losing to Eastern Michigan in the MAC championship game.
The following year, with Coles back as head coach, the RedHawks advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 as an at-large out of the MAC. It was the last time the MAC had a team other than the MAC Tournament champion advance to the NCAA Tournament. |
