Default Can Torontonians File a Complaint About This??

While I don't live in the city per se, I am in Toronto most of the time and to be honest, I don't want my tax dollars being spent on this campaign. I'm not homophobic but surely they can come up with a different tactic to entice tourists.

T.O. to Americans: We're 'as gay as it gets'

By ROSALYN SOLOMON

Tourism Toronto announced plans yesterday to woo gay travellers in the U.S. -- by letting them know this city is "as gay as it gets."

Research shows gay Americans take more trips, spend more money on vacations and are more likely to have a passport compared to their heterosexual counterparts, according to Tourism Toronto.

Tourism Toronto has been working with the Gay Marketing Advisory Group, led by Councillor Kyle Rae, who said people will finally see the city as more than just friendly.

"The tag line 'Toronto: As gay as it gets' comes out of people talking about their cities as being gay-friendly. Toronto's not gay-friendly -- it's gay," Rae said.

"This is where the fight for the equality of rights started."

Tourism Toronto plans to launch advertising in hot spots and at events in cities like San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.

Tourism Toronto opened its doors further by winning the bid to host the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association's 2009 annual convention, which David Whitaker, CEO of Tourism Toronto, said is a step in the right direction.

"We were thrilled they selected Toronto, it's very symbolic of our desire to strengthen, build and grow the relationship with travel professionals and institutional leaders of this very important movement," Whitaker said.

The gay and lesbian travel market is a $55-billion industry and other Canadian cities like Montreal have already made themselves a staple location for homosexuals.

According to Greg Kozdrowski, managing director from Rainbow High Vacations, Toronto has been lagging in the market, but is finally catching up to speed.

"If we don't put ourselves out there, a lot of other cities will take away those travel dollars from us," he said.
