BID TO CURB ONLINE STEROID SALES

March 5, 2007 -- Depraved doctors and crooked pharmacies will continue peddling illicit performance-enhancing pills to amateur and pro athletes across the country unless lawmakers pass tough new anti-drug legislation, a prominent federal lawmaker said yesterday.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) unveiled a bill that will help federal law enforcers crack down on online prescription-drug rings and toughen restrictions on human growth hormone, a dangerous prescription drug becoming increasingly popular among body builders.

Buying steroids and human growth hormone has become as simple as ordering a book online to athletes and teenagers throughout America, Schumer said alongside Albany District Attorney David Soares.

With just a few clicks of a mouse, anyone, including teenagers, can find access to these poisonous and dangerous substances.

Schumer's announcement follows the multistate raid last week of online drug rings that flogged steroids, human growth hormone and other performance-enhancing drugs over the Internet.

While many states have laws on the books that regulate the use of steroids, human growth hormone goes unregulated, said Soares.

Under the new bill, human growth hormone would become Schedule III controlled substances, putting them on a legal par with Vicodin and anabolic steroids.
