| Two bettors collect $1.12 million each on Big A's Pick 6 A record payout of $2.24 million in the Pick Six overshadowed stakes victories by Seattle Fitz and Austin's Mom yesterday at Aqueduct. Two bettors collected $1,120,287 apiece, the largest payoff for any type of racing wager ever made in New York. The previous high also came on a Pick Six — $767,998 in 1990. Seattle Fitz beat Evening Attire by a nose in the $110,100, Grade III Aqueduct Handicap. Seattle Fitz, a 5-year-old Argentine-bred son of Fitzcarraldo, covered 11/16 miles in 1:42.13 under Aaron Gryder and paid $7.40 as the second choice in a field of eight. Evening Attire, the 4-5 favorite, finished 11/4 lengths before Rogue Agent. Seattle Fitz, who's trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, is 4-2-2 in 15 starts and has earned $250,000. He finished fourth in the Grade II Clark Handicap last fall at Churchill Downs. Austin's Mom, seventh on the far turn, staged a strong stretch run to win the $109,600, Grade III Affectionately Handicap for distaffers by 51/2 lengths. The 4-year-old daughter of Sefapiano covered 11/16 miles in 1:44.02 under Pablo Fragoso and paid $25 as the fifth choice in a field of eight. Golden Damsel finished second, one length before Consort Music, a 57-1 shot. Message Red, the 2-1 favorite, was sixth. Austin's Mom, who's trained by Allen Iwinski, is 5-5-2 in 19 starts and has earned $202,000. This was her first stakes victory. She raced several times in Kentucky last year, when she was trained by Brenda Hill and Niall O'Callaghan. There was a $761,000 Pick Six carryover to start the day. The winners of races 5-10 were: Coined for Success ($18.60), Hornshope ($11.60), Our Tune ($25), A One Rocket ($14.60), Austin's Mom ($25) and Hot As A Pistol ($14.80). The winning tickets (8-10-6-3-6-10) were purchased in Southern California and St. Kitts in the British West Indies. Turfway: Stoneway led from the start and cruised to a two-length victory in the $50,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. The daughter of Storm Boot covered 61/2 furlongs in 1:19.67 under Michael Rowland and paid $27.40. Beau Watch finished second in a field of 10, a neck before Plumlake Lady, the 8-5 favorite. Stoneway, who's trained by Bernie Flint, is 3-0-1 in five starts and has earned $65,000 for James Stone's Stoneway Farm. Stoneway's only poor effort was an 11th-place finish in River Downs' Pepsi Bassinet Stakes on Aug. 30. A lung infection was discovered right after the race, and Stoneway got four months off. She's 2-0-1 in three starts since coming back. "I have to give the owner a lot of credit for being patient with this filly," Flint said. "She needed to take time off after she got sick, and that time also allowed her to grow up. She's got some talent." |
