mjh218,

Those messages come to you though the Windows Messenger Service. Unless you're in a LAN at work and actively use it, you can and should disable it.

here's how.

Glad to help.

These pop ups are not the 'traditional' pop ups. They're not loaded as part of a web site and are totally independent from your web browser.
They are instant spam messages sent randomly to millions of addresses. Most everyone that uses Windows has this software installed but doesn't know about it or use it.

The kicker is that many of these ads are for programs that will stop them. People fall for this and buy a program for something they could easily fix themselves for free!

I should also add that Windows Messenger Service is not the same as Miscrosoft's MSN Messenger that a lot of people here apparently use.

anyway...

Check for spyware like gator that install themselves onto your system and track all your viewing habits. I checked and had 377 cookies that were being tracked by it. Did a search for gator removal software and after a lot of searching found a free one made by lavasoft. It is called Ad-aware 6. I bet most of the posters here have something that was installed and they don't even know it. Remove this crap and run the software and the amount of messages and spam have been cut down dramatically.........hope this helps.
