Featherweight Cermeno arrested, charged with fraud
Monday, June 9
CARACAS, Venezuela -- Former featherweight champion Antonio Cermeno was arrested on charges he swindled $21,000 from a woman in what was supposed to be a currency exchange.
Cermeno, a 1998 WBA champion, was arrested Friday and charged Sunday with fraud, police commissioner German Chiquito said.
Sonia Ceron, a Caracas store owner, said Cermeno was supposed to give her dollars for bolivars, Chiquito said.
Cermeno left Ceron with two men, saying he had to retrieve the dollars from his car, and the men pulled a gun, tied her up and fled with the bolivars, Ceron told police.
Cermeno has denied the charges. The boxer said he gave the dollars to two companions, believing they would complete the exchange.
Many Venezuelans are buying dollars on the black market because it is difficult to get government approval to buy foreign currency legally.
Police are searching for two other suspects, Chiquito said.
Cermeno won 40 bouts, 27 by knockout. In 1995, he beat Wilfredo Vazquez of Puerto Rico to win the WBA junior featherweight title. In 1998, Cermeno won the WBA featherweight title, knocking out Nicaraguan Genaro Rios.
