Harrick fired; team out of NCAA, SEC tourneys

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Georgia basketball coach Jim Harrick was fired on Monday, and the school will announce at a 5:30 p.m. news conference that the No. 21-ranked Bulldogs will not participate in the upcoming SEC and NCAA tournament.

Harrick's departure comes only three days before the Bulldogs are scheduled to play Arkansas in the first round of the SEC Tournament in New Orleans. Harrick, one of only two coaches to take four schools to the NCAA tournament, guided the Bulldogs to a 19-8 record this season, including an 11-5 mark in the SEC.

Georgia was expected to play in its third consecutive NCAA tournament, the first time that's happened in UGA history.

Harrick has three years remaining on a contract that pays him $700,000 per season. According to the contract, Harrick was scheduled to receive a $400,000 longevity bonus on April 1.

Harrick's son, Jim Harrick Jr., was fired by the school last Wednesday after Cole accused him of sending him $300 to pay a phone bill, arranging for someone else to complete Cole's junior college correspondence courses, and giving Cole an A in a physical education class at Georgia that Cole says he never attended nor completed any work in.

Harrick, 64, is 470-235 in 23 seasons as a head coach. He led UCLA to a national championship in 1995 and Rhode Island to the round of eight in 1998. But NCAA problems tainted his tenures at both schools.

Harrick was fired at UCLA for filing fraudulent expense reports and a deposition filed by a former secretary at URI accuses Harrick of having grades changed for players, having student managers write papers for players and arranging for players to receive lodging, cars and money from boosters.

I'm sure that Railbird, a Jim Harrick fan and supporter, is now praying for him. I'm also sure that when Harrick dies and goes to Heaven, God will make sure that he coaches winning basketball teams Upstairs. Yeah, and I'm also sure that after I die and go to Heaven, God will make sure that I get some big, juicy middles (that hit, of course) on Harricks's games. But unfortunately, if you believe Brian Georgia, the bookies taking my action will be in Bookies Hell. Hey, any bookie with complaints about God's athletic program needs to contact his intermediary, Railbird himself.

Actually Harrick was not fired he was technically suspended with pay pending furthur investigation.

True, but that has as much significance as the fact that technically, Nixon was not impeached, and not forced out, he "resigned."

true but just want to get it as accurate as possible.

Like this should shock anyone...Georgia knew what they were getting, they just hoped they would not get caught!

Reno, it was very nice meeting you in LV a month ago. You are a very intelligent and knowledgable Man. However, your assault on God and Railbird are getting very old and tired.

Keep picking winners and middles, My Friend.

Go Vols,
